Another store bites the dust.... the fish market on Vanderbilt between Park and Prospect....

Whoa! That must have just happened.

Granted, the fish place out on 7th Ave is waaay better, but it's sad to see a comrade fall.

very sad. did you know that this was the last store (as of about 6 or 7 years ago) on Vanderbilt to have a screen door instead of a glass-and-steel front door? then they remodeled and after that it looked like every other fish place...

I think another victim of DH. I always liked them though... Should've given em a chance!

I never went there, always preferring the Korean market on flatbush, but really just not buying fish in the area at all unless stuck in a bind. Were they any good? It just didn't seem worth the risk to me, but obviously since I never went, I have nothing really to judge, pro or con.

They were really good and very nice. They would clean the fish... Call you when something you needed arrived from another store..

Looks like that was my loss then. I admit I'm very paranoid when it comes to markets. For a while I was training to be a chef (until I realized I hated cooking for money, go figure ) and there was that whole section about hygiene, law and safety that got drilled into me, making me unduly cautious. To a certain extent, it's ridiculous. Go to France, hit a bistro kitchen and you'll see uncovered food, meat left out, all kinds of American violations and it's totally fine and has been for centuries. Asia's the same way. But, you know, the training, you trust your teacher, etc. Habits are hard to break, especially when part of you argues that they're good habits.

What Korean market? There's nothing on Flatbush I can think of that's comparable to that fish market on Vanderbilt. Do you mean Natural Land? I'm hoping that I'm overlooking something, because there's no way I'm going to take a side trip to 7th and Garfield (or whatever the cross street is) to get fresh salmon or shrimp.

This is really bad news, because while the Met Foods is a nice little market for some things, the fish selection is ... do they even carry fish?

You're talking about Angel, right? Damn. I liked that place a lot--we always got our fish there!

Now it's back to Natural Land, I guess.

I saw a few slabs of salmon there the other day, and it didn't look promising (salmon of doubt?! any DA fans out there?!). That's all I've ever seen there.
