Can someone explain to me the evolutionary advantage conferred by eyebrows? Chimps and Gorillas seem to have naked brow ridges.

i'd assume that, like eyelashes, they were meant to help keep dirt or whatever from getting into your eyeball.

figure out why my already very furry cat has special eyelashes

I have an amazing eye brow specialist I use, but she works out of her home. And she lives right next to ground zero so it is a schlep. IN this nabe I have not found someone who really takes their time to get it right.

since i no longer work in mid-town, where threading places are all over, my eyebrows look wretched

same as the benefit of waxing, though hurts like hell, but i've had better results with threading.

if you've never had it done by a pro, try it. they get them so perfect it's shocking. with an arch. sometimes they dye them with a vegetable tint. and under $10.

Where do you have them threaded?

midtown. haven't found a place here when i can do a walk-in.

i just took a trip into Manhattan to get my hair cut and stopped in at a threading salon. gosh, do i feel better! i DO wish there was a place around here, though.

I have to ask -- because I'm a newbie -- to what does 'ham in the cooler' refer? I've seen it mentioned in several threads this evening.

okay, i know "ham in the cooler" prolly seems odd, and feel free to ask anytime about anything, newbie. with very few exceptions, we're a friendly (albeit sometimes weird) bunch. i haven't been around long myself, but i'd like to think i've settled in.

you know, I sometimes get my eyebrows waxed, and all these really ... trendy people tell me how hot I look. but I can't really see the diff. it's the kind of thing I only do now a week before a job interview or something. like "I gotta look like a pristine individual" situation. otherwise, I can't be bothered. also, it hurts.

That's funny, I think it makes a huge difference. I don't even have really hairy brows, normally, but just getting them cleaned up with a real arch makes my whole face look different. I was amazed the first time I got it done. But I may have to look into this threading thing, because I often get little bumps from waxing -- they go away in a day, but who needs it.

it's kind of like they polish off the look and frame your face. and that arch!

and i also don't have a lot of eyebrow, so there's a huge difference in giving them a "shape".

i do, however, have an "eyebrow" thing with guys. blonds and redheads, thick eyebrows. yowza.

and that's the real reason why i love threading -- i'm not a fan of the potential burns you can get from waxing. i have seen too many women (some friends included) who got a bad wax job and was burned. i'm a chicken about blisters on my face! threading is not pain-free, but then again neither is waxing.

I get pretty bad red marks that last several days from waxing, which is part of my 'icky' reaction. and I think tweezers hurt too much. I'm a wimp. does threading hurt?

it depends.

mostly, if the technician goes very slowly only threading small area at a time, it hurts less at that moment. but then you'll be sitting in the chair for 20 minutes or more. if the technician goes very quickly, she'll be threading larger areas at a time and it hurts more. but it's over much quicker.

i personally don't think threading hurts nearly as much as waxing, but i tweeze. since you mentioned your aversion to tweezing, i may not be the best person to ask. :-k

I'm going to bump this- anyone know of any other waxing places? I'm a waxing virgin! My eyebrows are getting bushier with age...

carmen, i've been going to any number of "beauty" places on my walk down fifth to sunset park every day. don't remember any by name, but the latina women in this nabe always have *great* brows, so i trust their salons and haven't been disappointed

hmmm any specific cross streets you can think of? I'm scared of waxing but I can't deal with trying to find the little blond hairs anymore.

not that i can think of, but def. between 15th and 25th, if that helps.
