77th Pct. Council meeting Monday

Come on out and meet the new commander, John Cosgrove. He spoke last night at the Community Board meeting and he struck me as very different from his predessor. Much more calm and approachable.

The meeting is at 7:30, the Center for Nursing and Rehab, at Classon and Prospect Place. Entrance on Classon.

for those who are around franklin, was anyone aware of the critical response zone that we had for the past week?
patrol cars on every other corner at night and more street patrol at all times?

i spoke to Cosgrove about it at the CB8 meeting and even though it was a temporary thing, he is very interested in the community's response to it...

Personally I was sitting in Saje listening to the regae band last Wednesday night, and it was a little distracting to have those lights flashing outside the window the whole time. (Franklin and Park Place)

My wife asked the officer what the deal was, and he said something about "just a test".

But if this is the price for peace of mind.......

i'll admit it was nice to have such a police presence, although summertime would be much more appropriate. this weather seems to have kept most everybody indoors. kind of seemed like overkill though, especially with the flashing lights. i like having the cops visible on franklin but every other block was a bit much. more of a foot patrol in the warmer weather would be nice. kind of hard to define a proper crime deterrent without turning franklin into a police state.

Well Nostrand certainly has been quiet, but its hard to tell if its the cops or the weather. Tell Cosgrove we'd like to see it in May/June when the hanging out really starts going strong.

Cosgrove has little control over the Critical Response/Surge drill. This drill is run by the Counter-Terrorism Bureau. Because this is a federally approved program that has been adapted to work in the outer boroughs at less obvious targets there are certain rules that have to be followed to maintain federal approval. One such "rule" is that the lights on the car must be on so as to make the police presence as visible as possible.

One of the main causes of the lack of foot posts in the 77 is simply a shortage of manpower. The 77 only got seven or eight cops so far this year with cops constantly leaving for other commands or details and retiring. The also put eight or so cops into a new unit that works primarily on foot but is in different locations from day to day to address the most current issues of the precinct.

i don't think the issue here is "who has control over critical response"

the question that i raised,
and what i assumed Cosgrove was interested in,
is how do the residents/merchants in the area feel about a marked increase in police presence.

your analysis of the situation, be it correct or not, does nothing to help get the question answered
and in fact, it might discourage people from answering as you have qualified it as being somewhat useless.

I would imagine that merchants along with residents would welcome the increased police presence in the community. Most decent, law abiding citizens appreciate the police, and those that dont are generally up to no good anyway. Enjoy it now, summertime is right around the corner and with the warmer weather comes in increase in crime.

By the way, it looks like Critical Response is leaving the 77 and going back to Manhattan. Sorry, Neene.

Very mellow event. Lots of love, free Valentine bears for everyone. Inspector Cosgrove spoke in some detail about the increase in grand theft auto, three officers were honored as "Cops of the Month". The usual collection of politicians showed up. No talk of DiNapoli though. Hard to believe those guys made him the Comptroller, and now won't talk about it.
