Where can I get a Philly-style cheesesteak?

Anyone know of a place to get a good Philly-style cheesesteak? My boyfriend had his first a few months ago when we visited my mom there, and he'd developed an unholy obsession (which included a 100-mile detour on a loong car trip). Important specs: thin shaved meat, caramelized onions, long roll, CHEESE WHIZ.

Also, has anyone tried Carl's in the city? we were thinking of trying those.

Thanks!

(ps. I'm also asking on chowhound)

I guess I am not the only one obsessed with Philly Cheesesteaks...

Lucky for you, Carl's on 34th and 3rd is ALMOST as good.... you should definitely check it out!

Is it just me or are the fries at Geno's/Pat's amazing as well? I would drive there just for the FRIES!

Try Carl's and let us know what you think!

If you're talking about Carl's in Murray Hill, I've tried it several times.

    It's no Geno's, but it's pretty good.

However, one time after eating there, I got violently ill, and since then my friends and I have called the place "Hot Carl's". :P

I can't vouch personally, but I've heard good things about 99 Miles to Philly on 3rd between 12th and 13th.

Ahem. I believe the correct spelling is "Cheez Whiz."

BOY ARE YOU IN LUCK. Tony Luke's just opened on 9th ave just south of 42nd st. Straight outta Philly.

We did go to Carl's, the downtown branch, and it was pretty darn close. Not amoroso rolls - a more substantial roll - and more generous with the fillings. YUM. We'll definitely be going again.

Does Tony Luke's do hoagies? I have such hoagie cravings (mostly ftom grad school where they were 2.99 and I knew the deli guys who usually gave me the 0.99 'special of the day' price.... sigh)

Honestly I try to stay out of Tony Luke's. Somehwow that 2 pulnd chicken sandwich makes me gain 6 pounds in the 2 hours it takes to finish.
