Slope Cellars

Where would we be without Slope Cellars? Without it I would slowly slip back into reality and Park Slope would just seem a bit more dull and I would realize that we are surrounded by clerks and want to be landed gentry.

I love Slope Cellars and the whole staff - especially Patty (and Otis and Greta).

I think that place sucks- everyone is weird there and the banter about wine is too much. You sound delusional. WTF.

I've been going there for ages - they know their wine but aren't snobby about it....have tons of "cheap and tasty" wines and don't try to steer you to something outside of your range....they're super friendly, partner with local businesses for events (regular dinners at restaurants or at somebody's private home), send out a newsletter, do their research, have a great "Buy 12 and get the next one for a buck" policy (and if you're on the border of getting a cheap or more expensive one for the buck they give you the more expensive one).....

I seriously don't know what's not to like.

My perception is that they used to be snobby but have relaxed a bit recently, hence the "cheap and tasty" wine selections. Maybe they realized that being snotty about wine was a turnoff for some people. I much prefer Big Nose Full Body -- I never feel like I'm being judged for what I buy.

That's interesting. I have been going there for ages. They remember my name, always ask me what I'm looking for (price/taste, etc.) and make good recommendations.....

Their prices are pretty good.

The only time I go elsewhere is when I am on 5th ave at the place btw. 14th/15th and that's for price only .....I don't want or receive any advice when I am there. I am not sure I'd trust advice if I received it anyway.

Patty and crew take trips to wine regions every year, hold lots of tastings and seem to know their stuff.

I guess everybody has a different perception, but I've never felt that service was snobby there.

Perhaps that Potter woman should buy a bottle of something nice to help her calm down. Shoot, I'll even pay for it.

I agree with Flexi completely. The folks at Slope Cellars have always been really friendly and knowledgeable without making me feel either pushed into a choice or ignorant about wine. They're quick to offer affordable choices rather than more expensive ones if I'm unsure, especially if I'm trying something for the first time. I have been going there for years, and I've yet to have a bad experience there.

Oh, I do think they're friendly; I didn't mean to sound so negative. I am very unsophisticated about wine, so I tend to feel very awkward in a store where the staff is passionate about it. I like Big Nose because they are helpful if you have questions but they aren't pushy about it.

Rose, I ask them very basic questions. Sometimes I just tell them what I'm eating....."I need a red wine to go with stinky cheese" and they pick it for me. Once you get the basics (for me, I like more intense reds...big and dry.....nothing really soft or fruity) they can pick something you like.

thanks, mr. money-troll, i'll take the bait: the biggest bottle of absolut, please. or a case of new zealand sauvignon blanc from the marlborough region.

I also really like Shawn's on 7th across from Key Food (is that annoying? --suggesting a liquor store below 9th street when the thread is a about one above it.) Anyway, when I saw Red White and Bubbly mentioned -- which I have to say in my experience is kinda spendy but cutely laid out and a great stop before Bierkraft -- I jumped at the chance.

I think they are great too. Patty never seems judgmental. There are times you just want cheap decent wine and there are times you want to buy a nice bottle for friends. I know a little about wine because I waited on tables but honestly the words I use are usually "anything that isn't remotely like chardonnay" and that gets the point across. Also if I have a great bottle at a restaurant they know the wine and can usually find somethiing similar (because often you can't get the exact same bottle since the vineyards are small and they might only sell to one distributer). I like the discount on mixed cases and the 10 bottle punch card.

These are the kind of local businesses that I think people talk about which originally made the slope a great neighborhood. Good product, good service.

not in the slightest. how the heck am i suppose to learn little insights about places other than the ones in South Slope otherwise? suggest away, Supernewbie. as long as you're polite about it, you'll always be a welcome addition to the discussion

Agreeing with the group. Like the folks there, not snobby, always funny. Love the "cheap & tasty," bu the rest is "high & pricey."

We go getto and goto Big J's by Lowes. Much better prices, but not as eclectic and interesting wine selection. Nor the funny banter, but I'll trade it for the prices...
