graham building, clinton hill

Im looking to buy in this area. Does anybody know or have seen the Graham Building on Washington ave btn deklb/lafayette ave? How does it look from the outside? Whats the neighborhood like? any advice on buying around the area would be greatly appreciaated. im looking a 2 b/r preferably in nice historical pre-war setting.tks

It's a very nice building from the outside too. Why don't you visit the neighborhood. Kind of odd to aks what it looks like... come have a look.

It says "Graham Home for Old Ladies" on the outside -- a cool piece of history that they kept on the building. Next door to a playground/park, half a block from a G train entrance and bus stops, beautiful street (I used to live on it). Never been inside but from the street the residences look roomy and beautiful with lots of windows.

But seriously -- just come and take a look. There's a lot to see over here. If you're looking to buy in the area, you definitely need to experience it for yourself.

That building is cool. How many smallish free standing apt buildings are there? Not a lot.

Yep, I think there are about 25 condos inside the building now.

Used to be a house of ill repute when my friends were at Pratt in the late 70's, early 80's. It was called the Bullshipper's Motel, or something very close to that. (Bullshipper's Motor Inn, I can't remember exactly.)

I'm glad it's been redeemed. Great old building! I always wanted to see inside, but never did.

BTW since Im living abroad, can anyone tell me which is a better neighborhood, Clinton Hill or Fort Greene? There are some apartments in FG that are within my budget too.

They are basically the same neighborhood. Depends on how close you want to live to the subway, as Fort Greene has a few more options.

My husband and I moved into this building fairly recently. I do agree with other posters that you should at least come around and check out the neighborhood. About the building: the outside really retains its original look from the 19th century (it's landmarked so must). The inside was gut renovated in 2002 but done pretty well. I would say the nicest things about the building are that it is freestanding, which allows for great light and a sense of privacy, and the park next door (especially if you have kids). I don't know where you're coming from but we came from Manhattan and are so glad we did. You have to enjoy a laid back vibe out here though; it's not for everyone.

Having read your post a few times, I wonder if it isn't a joke. You're looking to buy and are wondering what a particular building looks like from outside? Why don't you go and look at the building yourself? Unless you live out of the city, I think your posting is pretty moronic.

My dear friend, I live in Paris, France!!! Ive lived in NYC before (in the 90s).

Im making a nuisance of myself asking all sorts of advice but what Im hoping to do is to get a couple of interesting apartments together, hassle somebody to go look at them and then make a trip if the report is good. I just dont want to send people on a wild goose chase. Do you have any other idea how else to do this?

I live in Clinton Hill and while I love it, (very generally speaking) I think Ft Greene is nicer. It's closer to more subways (esp. if you leave near Atlantic Ave & Flatbush) and generally has more nice restaurants and bars. Also I think the ratio of pretty, Cosby-eque brownstone blocks is much higher in FG than in CH.

All that being said, parts of CH have everything that parts of FG have, so it really depends on what block you're looking at.

Many Real Estate Agency web-sites provide virtual tours of "luxury" properties. Other properties have VT's as well, though this is typically at the sellers discretion and the realty's capabilities. Hopefully, you will be able to get a glimpse of what the insides are like, though this too, will not give you the exact feel you get when seeing a property and/or the surroundings yourself. I recall getting lots of great feedback on a part of MA that my wife and I were considering moving to. When we actually got to visit, we hated the place (at least as far a a setting for families goes). The building that you are referring to in smak-dab in what IMHO is a great spot that almost rides the boarders of Fort Greene. I don't know if there is any current availability in the building, though these things change all the time. Good luck with your search.
