A car just blew up, literally, on Dean Street in front of the Newswalk buiding. Does anyone know what happened? The cop have not caution taped the area and are treating it as no big deal! Has anything like this happened here before?

Sorry for the typos earlier just shocked! Dean between 6th and Carlton. Right in front of the park. Car was parked on the sidewalk. We heard a boom, ran to the window and saw the car on fire.

After 9-11 in 2001 someone blew up a car here on Dean Street between Nevins Street and Third Avenue. When I grew up near Coney Island, seeing burned out shells of cars was quite common.

Many times cars that are stolen for joy-rides are torched after the joy-riders ditch it.

I know it's shocking, but it happens.

OK... but there is a church across the street, a fire department not 25 yards away, and a police precinct (78th) 50 yards away! We haven't seen this before, but then again we've only lived here for 6 months. There was a gunshot scare in the park not too long ago (loud boom and people screaming and running but no sign of actual gunfire), but we are generally not too worried because of the proximity of the police and fire folks....

Rumor has it there was a woman in the car, and a guy ran up and threw something into it. The woman got out, and the car exploded. That's the rumor at least, I didn't see it happen.

I just walked by the car in question (on display for all who care to see on the sidewalk next to the basketball courts) and it looks quite nasty. The scent of singed plastic is intense. Has anyone else walked by and seen this?

car fire.jpgThose of you lamenting the sanitized, homogenized, baby-pushing Prospect Heights: 2005 Edition can take solace in the fact that a car was torched and abandoned near the Newswalk condos on Dean Street on Friday night. See previous post for details. Many thanks to rogersma for pointing us to that incredible slideshow:

That's fucked up, but let's not conflate a car fire with a "car bomb." If it were a real car bomb, you'd be dead or looking for your missing limbs, rather than posting pics on Gawker.

    Subject: uhh...

there is no evidence that this car was "torched" at all. there are about a million different ways that the interior of a car can catch on fire (clearly what happened if you've seen the car)

if someone were going to "car bomb" or molitov coctail a car, why would they do it 1/2 block from a fire station? (and 1 block from a police precinct).

and if there were a criminal investigation the "crime scene" would not be accessable by pedestrians.

a car caught on fire...it happens.

What happened to that busted up SUV halfway up on the sidewalk in front of a fire hydrant on St Marks (UH/Wash)? Is this a trend? :?:

From the looks of it, it was a wrecked car that got tagged by sanitation for pickup. When that happens, it's a signal to anybody with a wrench that "this car is up for grabs". Eventually the sanitation deptartment will haul the carcass off and the owner will handed a big fat bill for disposal.

Would everyone who is complaining about the car "bomb" terminology please note that it originated on the page of the person who posted the pictures, who has nothing to do with DH; and, as far as I can see, it hasn't been repeated here except by people taking issue with it. Shall we move on?

no, youre all wrong. "the car bomb" is a tune off of Dr. Dre's The Chronic 2000.
