Disturbing Discovery on Plaza St

There was a mighty stench of death wafting all over Plaza St E and it had nothing to do with the construction starting at Union Temple.

A leaf-and-lawn sized trash bag was left inside the fence of Plaza right in front of #50. It started smelling like total rot. Police called. What was it? Was it a chopped up underworld figure? Was it a sack of heads? No. It was about 50 pigeons. Police left said bag stinking like shit covered death. Calls to 311 ensued.

dude, no doubt. the odor there was insane... i even saw the bag, which has now split open, but couldnt discern the contents, theyre that ripe.

anyway, im not super-sensitive to smells, but damned if i didnt hold my breath for as long as i could as i walked to the train this morning... something about not wanting filthy nanoparticles of rot all up in my olfactory system.

i called 311 also.

its saturday afternoon...the bag is still there
i called 311 again and they seemed a little more interested this time.
they forwarded me to a "specialist". they took the exact location of the bag and said that since it was a priority call, it would go to the dept of sanitation garage right after we got off the phone.
i don't know what that means but i hope it means that the smell will be gone soon

This is so extremely appalling. I feel like we're slowly turning into a third world country. No civilized nation allows things like this to stay on the street for days and days. :x

What pisses me off, and I told the 311 operator so, is that NYPD was called to investigate the bag. It could have been full of dead babies, for feck's sake. They checked it out and it was nothing but dead pigeons. Do they call Sanitation or Parks? Hell, no. I guarantee that if this call came in from PS there would be a haz mat team there with Emergency Services providing cover fire. Even on the west side of Plaza St it would have been assholes and elbows to get it fixed. It has been there for 6 days now. I am waiting for Patricia Cornwell to show up and write a book about this. :roll:

what's bizarre to me about this entire thread is ... why is someone killing 50 pigeons? and why are people so numb to the idea that that part was WRONG?

nypd should have been investigating THAT because there are actually are laws against killing birds including pigeons.

Has anyone reported this to the ASPCA? Whoever has specifics should. This might be illegal trapping or illegal poisoning and if so it might still be going on. There could be dozens of pigeons crowded in illegal traps with no food in the rain and unable to get back to their mates and young ones right now.

It is difficult for me to give a shit about pigeons. I am not afraid of the bird flu (overrated), but if you want to see a potential vector just look at any pigeon.

actually, i read this morning in the paper that pigeons arent well-suited to carry bird flu. it seems to prefer to hang around fowl, waterfowl, geese, etc.

but then again, i got this info from... *gasp*... METRO, so you never know

re: the person above... i wonder why they didnt just call it in themselves. seems like they went through enough trouble to make the post, exhort us to do something, look up the number/email/contact info... then just sorta dropped the ball.

its like, if youre gonna go through that much trouble, just call it in yourself and point em to DH. though that might get you a ticket for letting your dog shit in the park, i fear :P

I think the other poster didn't know the address, didn't see it , etc. etc. there are things that could be reported based on actually witnessing this, versus hearing about it second or third hand.

I called 311 4 times myself. Didn't know that about pigeons and bird flu, but I will stick by my filthy bird analysis on histoplasmosis alone. Ick.

I wonder what those little buggers taste like? I read somewhere that they were originally introduced to the US as food, but that people stopped eating them. Looks like I missed my chance, huh?

thank you so much for posting that picture! i saw that turkey some months ago and never got around to figuring out its story. i was sure the city would make it leave (like they relocated, or tried to , the roosters in prospect park). do you know anything more about it? how long it's been there? how it got there? that's a great shot of it with the squirrel! thanks.

I did report it myself to the A but as cat says I wasn't there and don't have the level of info anyone who actually saw it has. The people who answer 311 calls should have known to contact both ASPCA Enforcement and the Health dept., not to just call Sanitation for a pickup. But I guess not.

It's true that pigeons were tested and can't carry avian flu or West Nile. I've read that there have been no cases of histoplasmosis transmitted to humans from pigeons in New York City. Our pigeons have immune systems of steel here.

Thanks for anything anyone can report in addition to what was said above. Please keep a look-out for traps on roofs in the area and carry a camera if you have a convenient one.

I love that turkey. I know it up showed there about 2 years ago right around Thanksgiving time and the parks dept. and lunch eaters named it I think Zelda or Hilda. As far as the parks workers knew she/he just showed up one day and has decided to stay. Gentrification go figure
