As was discussed in great detail in the other thread (where I originally posted the Duran Duran guy :)) Hipsterism is more about the attitude than the clothes...though I must say that while I've seen plenty of people who might dress somewhat hipstery and yet be completely normal/nerdy, I have never seen a true hipster without the outfit. If that makes sense.

in williamsburg on friday (I seriously felt like I was on some outing for a sociology class) I saw a lot of scraggly moustaches and beards. NASTY. and suits. lots of guys in suits, but not work suits. like, dirty old linen suits.

the suits are all the rage. it's a little to funky (as in socks) and not fresh for me.

ahh, but the girls in their frye boots, $300 jeans and thrifted girl scout jamboree 1978 t-shirts really dig a man in a suit.

True true. I have my basketball jersey from 5th grade and it's very vintage polyester tee hipster fab. Perhaps I should bring it to Billyburg consignment.

    AAA!!!

Click the cartoon guy in the center and then click what comes up.

By the way, I have the proud owner of a premium femullet working in my building. I wish I was more stealthy with a camera.

The day you quit you should just run up to her scream and snap a photo. (I meant the day you leave)

Oh, that's right. I forgot that the "hobo beard" is in right now. Its all Ryan Adams fault.

A yuppie is a young urban profeessional. Their worst crime is being young and somewhat conservative and asiring to just be an urban suburbanite with material aspirations and conservative outlooks. Can't stand them, but at least they fend for--and pay for--themselves.

Hipsters are self-consciously retro brats who are obsessed with authenticity--and the quest for it--but do verfy little on their own to achieve authenticity. Paying $30 for a preworn vintage t-shirt makes more sense to the hipster than paying $10 for a t-shirt they would wear out themselves. And their money? It doesn't necessarily come from their parents, but it doesn't come from their own work either. Mooching hipsters strain roomate relationships and have I.O.U.s up the wazoo. And beyond that, it's retro hipster chic to smoke crack, snort/shoot heroin and do some cocaine. And then they wonder where all the money goes.

Yes. And the key word in that description is "self-conscious". It oozes off them like bad cologne. Barf.

KateBklyn, I like your style :D

yeah. parents of hipsters weren't even contemplating marriage in 1978. early 80s is the best time for an ironic birth. right now.

Nah, I have a few uber-hipster cousins born quite a few years before and around 1978.

Oh, we're hip.... to hating hipsters.

Hipsters do... whatever is cool - as defined by other hipsters, and, more importantly, Vice magazine.

Hipsters are mad at the world for all the wrongs it has done to them... or at least to others they really couldn't care less about.

    Hipsters are cooler than thou.

Hipsters have trust fund credit cards, but also work part time as a writer for an "underground magazine" you probably wouldn't have heard of - because your not cool enough!

Hipsters are "roughin' it" out in Williamsburg.

Hipsters can willingly remember theme songs to sitcoms that went off air before they were born.

Then there's us... and we're cool because we just do our thing.

edit: Oh, and she-hipsters tie a pigeon feather in their greasy unwashed hair because it makes them feel connected to the ether that is life.

Yes, precisely, thank you. The reason this debate remains is because some people misuse the term to dismiss anyone who might happen to own a thrift store T-shirt or two. Which is just wrong. :x
