that's interesting. yesterday they had paper up in the windows and a sign that it was "closed for repair". I thought I remember seeing the same for the Windsor Chop House? Did you notice anything there?

Ok, this is one place that I am NOT sorry to see go. Such crappy food. It's a great location for a good dining spot. Fingers crossed

I think we need a separate forum just to list all the closings of various stores and restaurants in the hood-sheesh!

hum, oddly, the PH/CH board is ruled by mugging threads and ours is all about shop closings.

not sure why people focus on the negative.

i hear about just as many openings in the hood as i do about closings.

so far recently we heard about romp, which is becoming a dvd place. there's an old card shop on 5th that became a barber shop. biscuit bbq is apparently reopening with a new name, chef etc in a couple months, there is a new organic yogurt place opening up on 7th and berkeley, i could name about 20 new places that opened up on 5th and 7th over the last year.

this is the natural state of a capitalist economy. especially one like park slope which is more mom and pop than most. i don't think it's any cause for alarm.

    yet.

At one time the bar would be three deep and the food was good [not great] but it went down the shitter due to internal bickering between the Managers.

Matty, who had managed Circles ,left as he realized what would eventually happen.
He opened Magnolias, which is doing well

I'm not sorry to see circles go, but the Windsor Chophouse, this would be a loss! I'll have to cruise by there later today.

Their food was damn good and although the prices seemed a bit steep, you got a lot of food for your money: a nice salad, giant slab of meat, two TASTY sides. Ample portions. oh man, DELISH!

Sadly as good as it is, the Chophouse was almost always empty when we ate there or passed by. Bf and I agree that the Chophouse was a victim of guilt by association with Circles. They shared the same kitchen and although the food was delicious I think a lot of people who might have been willing to splurge might have been put off of trying the Chophouse by their relation to Circles.

Woe!! what will go in there now I wonder.

    i'm guilty of this!

you and the bf guessed correctly, at least in my case...

I liked Windsor Chophouse too, but was not a fan of Circles. If the Chophouse had advertised or promoted themselves at all, they could have drawn people because the food was good and very affordable.

It would be good if something went in those spaces quickly because abandoned real estate is not a good thing to have, especially a space that large. Walking home from the store tonight I saw two sketchy guys trying to get in Windsor Chophouse, trying the doors and windows to see if they'd open.

I only ate in the Chop House once but it was good! A really lovely steak and nice service and it was EMPTY! Being attached to Circles was not a plus. there was assumption that the two places would be the same lousy qualility.

What's not closing? Within the last month, I've heard that these businesses are closing/have closed:

    -Circles (duh)
    -Cocette
    -Fashion Cafe (clothes not food)
    -Biscuit
    -Maggie Moo's
    -Laila
    -Blue Ribbon Sushi (just kidding)
    -Spirito?
-D'agastinos (Union Market's crappy staff make me miss D'ags)

A little off original topic, but I have to agree with turtle 95. The faster these empty storefronts go (whether or not I like what closed) the better.

I live within steps of Cocette and this morning found that some imbecile had broken a side window. Don't know why, but I can imagine.

Either way, my poor pup innocently stepped on a big a** piece of glass and had it embedded in her paw. Had to take her to the vet for x-rays, glass removal, stitches, meds to ward off infection, etc.

Sorry for the rant, but REALLY why does anyone have to be so destructive.

Why create more controversy than necessary??

Again, sorry for the random, off topic rant.

Littlegal.. You have a reason to rant!! I am so sorry your dog was injured and hope that because you were right in there and got good medical care before a possible problem that your pooch will be just fine,

    Replying to YS and Veets

Still off topic, but I appreciate your thoughts. My girl is doing well. Thank God I noticed the glass outside Cocette and the limp paw right away. It was a bad cut, according to the vet, and could have had a much worse result if I hadn't noticed so quickly.

Glad to say my baby appears to be starting to heal at the end of day one. Most important, there is no noticeable psycological damage thus far.

Don't worry she is very spoiled and will weather the storm. Thanks so much for the thoughts. Much appreciated!

Well I guess I would rather have stores in the nabe close rather than getting mugged!

(only kidding.. no disrespect to prospect heights)

The place was emptied out by Friday.

They held an Auction on Wed. & Thur.

I actually bid for and bought two drunks and hope to sell them to Mooneys for a profit

I spoke with one of the employees today and he said the controlling partner decided enough was enough with the declining business and decided to shut Circles down ,over the objections of his two partners.

He intends to open an Irish Pub on the site.

srsly?!? no joke? i'd be thrilled if there were a bona-fide pub in the nabe. he's gonna have to put some frekin' TAPS in first, no? there'd better be draught beer and draught cider, too, if he wants to be taken seriously by this Mick!

(actually, Irish don't eat corned beef. Irish-Americans do. But don't worry. I won't tell...)
