Red Hot Szechuan: Closed or Renovation?

I've read in a few places online over the past day or so that Red Hot Szechuan is closed. I've read of paper covering windows, and differing accounts of "closed for good" and "could be renovations". I used to live nearby but not anymore, so I'm not going to walk by there anytime soon. Does anyone have the scoop?

I'm not sure, but we called for delivery last night and the line was busy. I would think if they were closed for renovations, they would have a message saying so.

NOW that is a tragedy. Damn. I never understood how they could deliver so quickly? It seems I am still on the phone giving my order when the doorbell rings. I really hope it is only renovations because is there any other decent Chinese food around?

Mark my words, another overpriced place with mediocre food will open up there or else a bank, realtor or cell phone store. Sigh.

Please don't let this be true! I was just there on friday for take-out, and everything looked totally the way it always does. The restaurant is usually pretty empty, but their take-out volume must be huge. My six-year-old loves their tofu, I don't want to give her the bad news...

So does anyone live or work close enough to the place to at least confirm papering or not? I read of this on a Park Slope mailing list, as well as one of the myriad of Brooklyn blogs. I don't want to feed the fire of an incorrect rumor, especially as I won't be near there until at least Saturday to confirm!

I really hope they're not closing, their hot and sour soup is my absolute favorite. And the instant delivery!

I'm on the same block as Red Hot, and there's no paper, just closed gates. It is a shame. Plus, the drivers were very nice to me, especially when I was driving around looking for a spot and they'd give me theirs.

I just ordered from them last week and they were hesitant to deliver past the expressway (and they've never had a problem before). The woman on the phone indicated that they probably wouldn't deliver to me in the future.

The food was no where near as good as it has always been. Even my scallion pancakes weren't great :(

I wonder if there's been a change of management? It would be sad to lose this place, or even have a change in the excellent food and service.

This will be a problem - it's the only Chinese joint my wife and I agree on.

Does anyone know of a place where the hot & sour soup has a lot of those black mushrooms in it? I'm not sure what kind of mushrooms they are - tree ear maybe?

I passed by tonight, the gates were down and I did not see any signs indicating why they were closed.

In case they are gone...can anyone recommend any other good Chinese restaurants around here (and one that doesn't use MSG)...they were the only one I ever ate at!

Another place that was open for many years-I know they were there for more than 10. Were they there for 15 years? Did the landlord happen to say why they closed up after so long?

It was my favorite too. And also the only place hubby and I could agree on. he loves Tofu on 7th, I am not a fan and we both hate a ton of other places around here for various reasons (cleanliness, bad tasting food, etc).

Many years ago, we used to order from the place on 6th Avenue and Union Street-are they any good still?

I'm not crazy for Tofu on 7th either...I've eaten at the one on Union & 6th - it was OK. There used to be a great Chinese restaurant on 5th Avenue called Kar's (not the takeout place, but a real restaurant)...very small menu but such good food...

It's sad seeing all these places closed...I hate passing Cocotte...

That's the place I order from most. It's Park Slope Chinese (i.e. not great), but probably the best in the area. If I had a car, I'd just drive to Sunset Park and takeout all the time, but as it is I'm stuck with Hunan Delight.

I can't believe it. It seems everyone I know loved this place, and ordered from it weekly! How can it be?! If high rents caused this fave place to go out of bizniz, you better believe I'm going out and tipping big at all of my fave places this week! See ya at Cafe Steinhoff, Press 195, Bar Toto, etc..

What's your address? I'll mail you the huge pile of menus waiting in my hallway every evening. . . . I'm sure one of them is good!

Of all these places mentioned here, Hunan Delight is the only place I ever tried. It's good! Curried chicken is yummy! Mmmmmmmmmmmm!

I think that Halal place on 4th avenue is pretty good.

It's really sad. We've been ordering from Red Hot since they opened.
On a positive note, while looking thru the menu folder, I found one from a place called Szechuan Garden. They're in Cobble Hill on Smith Street but deliver to the Slope. We ordered last night and the food showed up quite fast... not Red Hot fast, but within 30 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised. I recently picked-up a Szechuan cookbook and found that this place was more authentic than anything I've had outside of a chinatown restaurant.
