May Day Hardware, sketchy...

So yesterday I went to May Day hardware on Washington near Sterling. I have been there before a bunch of times and thou they are dog friendly I have never quite enjoyed going there. The staff has always been nice and friendly but the owners were never really friendly, or kind of sarcasticly friendly. Anyway I went there yesterday because my front door knob pulled off. I brought all the hardware: the knob, the hatch the screws, to May Day. present was the gentlemen I briefly mentioned above Jay or Jerry I think I heard him called, A slightly over weight male probably 50 or so. I showed the lock and asked him what I need to buy. He said I didn't need to "buy" anything but I just needed to listen to him on how to put it back together properly. So I stood and I listened as he gave me 15 minute education on my door lock. When he was done he said "So, you don't need to buy anything. But you do need to pay $25.00 for my help." Also during my lecture a few people came up to purchase things, one guy bought something for $3.98 and he told them $4.50 another gut bought something for $2.98 and he said $3.50. Apparently he doesn't know the proper tax... "You're kidding," I said. "We were talking I thought you were being helpful." He was not kidding. This guy is a shister! And he has lost a customer.

    Did you pay him? I would not have paid him. If he was offering you paid advice, he should have warned you.

    Yes, I agree. Not the best of places, but if you know what you need, and they have it, and there is no other choice then that is fine. Otherwise, I go to Pintchick, or Lowes or HD, or any other place.

    I thought of running out. I questioned him a few times and stood there in disbelief. Then I decided to pay and never go back.

    Wow. I would have walked out. If he tried calling the cops, what would he have said? you didn't steal anything

    I went there a couple weeks ago looking for a can of WD-40 He had 2 sizes, large can 16 oz and a small. 16 oz can was $20.00. Told him I only needed a small size 5.5oz. Guess how much.........


    Drum roll please! Daddadadadadadada.

    $12.00!

    I looked at him, Blinked, told him to "Go Fuck Yourself!" and walked out.
    Headed over to Flatbush and got the small 5.5oz can at a little Hardware store (I don't remember the name.) Price? $3.25!

    If my apartment was on fire and I had to buy a fire extinguisher. I'd walk back to Flatbush. May Day will NO longer getting a penny from me.

    May it it Rot in Hell.


    P.s - I can't believe you paid him. What was he going to do if you didn't?

    He was just testing you to see if you felt in his scam and it seems you did. Sorry for the loss. If I were you I would report him to the Better Business Bureau for running that kind of business.

    I agree with RAW. You should report it to BBB. They'll start a file on him, if they haven't already. May Day needs to go!

    (that really blows, you should go back and talk to him about something and then charge HIM for you time.)

    I would have walked right out of there. I don't know, maybe you felt intimidated.

    Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I'm still discovering the neighborhood, and only recently noticed May Day. Thought that it might be a nice local place (although I'm just as close to Pintchick and have found them to be super helpful), glad to know that it's not.

    $12.00 for a can of WD-40??? That's outrageous.

    I kinda hate that place, too. I went there a few months ago after vowing to never return months before to find some bathroom caulking. they had some. it had expired 2 years ago. and was like 7 times more expensive than the high grade, unexpired stuff I ended up buying at a midtown hardware store near my workplace. conclusion: they suck.

    The relationship between the owner of the store and his employees is also very strange, what with the owner's weird, sarcastic way of talking to people. Man, it must suck to work there.

    I would have told him - After you show me the sign posted where all customers can see stating that I have to pay for your time - I will give you the $25 when you give me a receipt for services rendered making sure to include your contractors and/or locksmith license #.

    Yes, in hindsight I was wrong. I should have hauled ass or stood my ground and just said NO! However I guess I was little intimidated by this man for some reason. I did file a complaint with BBB, thanks for the link.

    After hearing this, I'm officially done with that guy. I've personally never had a problem (I did notice he treats employees like shit), but I recently bought a friend there to get keys made---of course, it was a fortune.

    I think he needs to charge so much because he simply doesn't have enough customers.

    FYI, Chris, the owner of Flatbush Hardware is an expert concerning all things Locksmithian, including doorknobs. He makes house calls, too. Highly, very highly recommended.

    Is that the locksmiths shop on the west side of Flatbush, the one with the big dog? If so, I highly agree. He tried to give me some advice over the phone, but the lock was clearly broken. He came to my apartment within about an hour and replaced it.

    That's the place I got WD-40 from. They're really nice people. I price was fair.

    I recently spent $40 there (I was really desperate) for a defective shopping cart.

    Never ever shopping there again.
