My brother in law will be around this weekend and I want to do something fun with him like go to dinner and maybe see if there is anything going on around town. He's not a tourist, but it's been a while since he lived in Brooklyn so I'd like to show him anything cool and new in the nabe. He's a good boozer and enjoys good food too.

Any ideas? I'm open to going out of bounds and exploring other destination restaurants etc...

    Weather Up.

    Franny's.
    Garden Cafe.

    Tacos Matamoros.

If you'll have a car, Sripraphai (or if you don't mind a long multi-subway ride to Queens via Manhattan).

I was at Aji the other night and they told me about a belly dancing event Friday night with happy hour drinks and half naked girls. A brother might be into that! Plus their menu looks awesome- I just had a drink.

Also some of us are planning to go to the Botanic gardens on Sunday for a live jazz concert in the rose garden. I haven't yet figured out how to sneak in an adult beverage heavy picnic, but that is the intention.

Well nothing mexican because he's from Latin America (Ecuador? El Salvador? Damn I can't remember!) so he's used to really good latin food.

I like the idea of heading over to vanderbuilt. He really liked Beast for brunch last time. Weather Up is very pretty too.

Where a good place for steak or meaty-things and maybe some music or a good jukebox?

Has anyone been to Alchemy for brunch? Are they still doing that?

I understand but 3 words - Redhook Ball Fields ;), check out the soccer games, then take a walk over and get a key lime pie on a stick, sit out in Fairway's tables and enjoy the view.

Aw girl, I would! Except they still haven't cleared there permits as far as I know, so there's no vendors there yet. :(

if you decided to do vandy/PH, def. do frannys and then weather up. it's a bit on the pricey side to do both but god, they're delicious.

was at beast last night - quality of food still totally awesome - that duck confit special was outrageous.

Try Franklin Park for your drinking. It'll show your brother just how rapidly that part of town is changing. Otherwise, I think the Vanderbilt suggestions are worthwhile (include Barrette, assuming that he enjoys burlesque and go-go dancing!).

Just got back from lunch and found out that this weekend is Salsa Saturday (12-5pm) at the Seaport with quite a few bands performing and Johnny Rivera headlining. My husband and I LOVE this event and have such a great time at them!

One restaurant I dont mind traveling to is Sofritos on East 57th St and 1st Ave in Manhattan.Always a good atmosphere, good music and good food and lots of it for the money. You will definitely be taking home a doggie bag.Check out their website where you can see the decor and some of the dishes they serve and get a taste of the music they play although they have live entertainment on nites.I think it is Sofritony. When the food comes to your table it looks just like the photos you see .I have yet to recommend this place and get negative feedback. Another restaurant in Brooklyn that has great atmosphere, garden seating, good music and live bands and excellent food is Sugarcane on Flatbush and Bergen. Their drinks are excellent also.

That website look delicious! I'll definitely suggest it!

I'm kinda thinking of having lunch at El Grand Castillo with him at some point to hit up their Pernil and Tostones. There's just so many options out there!

Is there any good Thai in the area?

Has anyone had the Oysters, fish&Chips, or burger at Sheep Station?
I've has the lamb sandwich that Pitu loves  and the poutine, but haven't strayed further than that.

I've had all three. I LOVE oysters. yum! never had a problem with freshness or quality of them or mussels at SS. also love their fish & chips. the burger is "eh" - too much stuff on too small a bun/too big a patty. sounds like a good thing but when the bun is no longer serving as a napkin, all hell breaks loose. it's a knife & fork burger but not delish enough (like bonnies) to be one. bleh.

stick with the stuff you love ... or stuff I rec. ;) my favorite tooth-pain meal was oysters & mashed potatoes at sheep station.

Haven't had any food at Beer Table, but love their ambiance and beer selection. I'd start with it, and then hit the town

its on vanderbilt in prospect heights, look on the prospect heights board for a detailed conversation about it. It's a "speakeasy" type place with quality drinks and an interesting polished decor. Not sure if their backyard is open yet but it should be soon if not.

So here's how it worked out:

Bro and I with Papi Chulo hit up a ton of places and had a great time. Here's what's worth reporting.

Had brunch at Alchemy on Sat. It was surprisingly great! I loved it.
Had this corned beef eggs benedict dish: potatoes, strips of corned beef with the egg and hollandaise on top. It was juicy, flavorful and perfect with the beer. Bro had the salmon egg benedict, also terrific and Papi had the Guinness pancakes with calamelized pecans and fresh berries and fruit on top. This was the best! I was picking off his plate the whole time. I NEED to go back and get this again.

We had dinner at Beast on Sat... divine as always. The mussels, skirt steak and the duck there is just wonderfull. I love the skirt steak! So tender and the fritters that comes with it is perfect to sop up the creamy chipotle dressing.

We also ate at Gehnet on 4th ave the new Ethiopian place. I was in heaven the tuna tartar appetizer was so good and just completely new for me. It came rolled up like a wrap and was spicy and rich with flavor. Really hard to describe. The lamb was wonderfully browned with onions and came alive with a squirt of lime. This was my favorite. I have no idea what else I was eating. My brother ordered. But it was all great and we just dug in to this massive bowl of sides and courses and made a gluttons of our selfs and with a great red wine to wash it down.

Of course we hit tons of bars and went to the city and ate at random places there too. Thanks for all your advice everyone!! He had a great time.
