Any suggestions on where I can find cardamom pods fresh curry leaves, preferably near 7th Ave/Union area?

I've never cooked with either. Do they go by other names or are there good substitutes that are easier to find?

mmmm cardamom - why does that look like it's spelled wrong?

I bet you can get card pods at Key Foods. Mmm one time at band camp I used them to make card creme anglaise for chocolate souffles............. yum.

Sahadi's is best! Alternatively, Kalustyan's in Manhattan is also great. I don't know of any other names for those ingredients. There's no real substitute for curry leaves, but any curry leaves you don't use will keep well in the freezer. You could conceivably use cardamom seeds or ground cardamom instead of pods, but pods are better. If you do use ground or seeds, you'd have to use way less than the recipe calls for in pods. Also, you should know that there are different types of cardamom pods (white, green and black).

I would venture a guess (because i've never been there but have heard wonderful things) and say Sahadi's.

Sahadi's fan here, but I was just hoping to find the stuff within a short walk of home due to time/trying to stay off my ankle. I may just have to bus it over, though...

I was around Union Square yesterday and thought Whole Foods would have all the seasonings and such that I needed but no pods and they were out of every brand of tumeric.

If you're a food co-op member, they always have cardamom pods and sometimes have curry leaves.

If you're not and must stay in the neighborhood, PS Coffee Tea and Spices (5th Avenue near 5th Street) would have your cardamom, probably not the curry leaves.

If you do travel, I'd try Kalustyan's before Sahadi. I'm pretty sure I've looked for curry leaves at Sahadi and failed to find them. Sahadi's great for specialty middle eastern spices, not quite as good for Asian herbs/spices. Plus, if you strike out at Kalustyan's, there are any number of Indian shops nearby.

They are a fabulous spice and specialty foods store in Curry Hill (Lex and 27th?). They have lots of Indian stuff, including about a dozen types of their own curry mix. Prices are pretty decent too.

Well, no luck on the curry leaves in the hood or at Sahadi's or anywhere near Sahadi's.

I did find out from a tea and spice shop guy off of Atlantic that what I have that was labeled as cardamom seeds is actually the pod! I've never cooked with it so I had no idea--it looked like a seed to me.

No home-cooked dinner tonight. I'll have to try to find the curry leaves in the curry row vicinity tomorrow if I can make it over.

Thanks for all the help. Before NYC I lived in much smaller towns and got used to just having to give up on a lot of Indian and Asian recipes b/c many ingredients just weren't available. Now I'm finally taking advantage of the groceries of NYC.

Wow, I'm surprised they didn't have them at Sahadi's. I could have sworn they at least had them in the frozen section. Sorry you made the trip for nothing. :(

Ask a friend or neighbor who belongs to the coop.

Then you can get them kicked out of the coop for shopping for you when you don't work there!
