Yah, I was just in the park wondering the same thing.

huge trucks putting up lights, speakers, seating, etc near the ball fields. Is this for Dylan or something else?

I thought Dylan as well, but he is playing August 12.

well, the opera is Friday...do you think they are expecting big crowds for a show this week and planning to share the sound with more of the park?

The Philharmonic usually plays in that spot, and they play early in the season, so I bet its them.

If you saw them in Long Meadow near the ball fields, then it's definetly for the Met Opera...

It's the opera, folks. Talked to some stagehands during my morning ride in the park.

How close to the ball fields are the speakers? Will people be able to play on the fields tonight?

I wouldn't think so. There are towers all over the fields.

I think I read somewhere that they are expecting 150,000 people to attend. Is that possible?

Check out the size of the viewing area:

If it is any near scale, it would encompass all of the ball fields and then some, no?

Looks different than last year. The stage was just south of the path between the b-fields and LM, facing the b-fields.

This year the stage looks to be in the same spot this year, but the viewing area from that diagram doesn't make sense to me--lots of hills and trees in the way.

Yes... the viewing or rather hearing area is huge for Fri performance. the expectation of 150,000 people is because this summer no Met. performances in central park so they think and extra 40 thousand people are coming to Brooklyn to hear it... yeah sure!!

The towers are set up as far back as the Tennis House.

They were setting up the stage yesterday:

More people will come than would come in Manhattan? Interesting logic.
