His family needs to take charge and teach him his actions are a no-no before someone does beat the crap out of him before realizing he probably does not know better.

Its not a matter of them teaching him. He's autistic and an adult who didn't have a lot of behavioral early intervention, so getting him to let go of an OCD type compulsion is probably difficult as all get out. Its difficult as hell for people who are completely functional to deal with compulsions even with therapy.

I feel sorry for his family, who has to deal with this. Perhaps there is some sort of adult protective services intervention that could assist them with getting him help.

Anyone who threatens or commits violence against someone because they rip a sign down from a lamp post is the mentally ill one. If you have a problem with what he is doing, call the police.

And by saying “someone” is going to beat the crap out of him, or something to that affect, it’s just a thinly veiled threat.

Uh, okay. I'm pretty sure that you can say "someone," while actually referring to a person besides yourself. In fact, "someone," typically refers to a person besides yourself, if someone recalls correctly.

Jamzer, don't be naive... it is entirely likely that someone will eventually assault this guy if they catch him tearing down their signs. No, I am not threatening him, veiled or otherwise. And I don't believe KosherDave was either.

The city is full of people whose first instinct is violence. Sooner or later he's going to encounter one or more of those people.

For that matter, violence may solve the problem. I've never heard that autistic people are immune to Pavlovian conditioning. Enough beatdowns, and the guy may learn to refrain from tearing down other people's signs.

Given the level of family support he has, he might be the easiest client on a typical APS workers caseload.

I'm predict his family has already tried Meds, but thief effect and his compliance is limited.

Yes, such violent individuals still exist. I hope this guy avoids them somehow. A beatdown is too severe for such a small property offense.

In my experience, violence never solves a problem, it just creates a different problem.

It's funny that the guy ran away when confronted (in the most recently cited event). It would appear he understands that ripping down signs is inappropriate behavior.

No, it's not a thinly veiled threat, or any threat for that matter. It's a comment that someone might beat this guy up. If I meant I was going to, you can be sure I would have said that. As it was, I was referring to someone else. Which is what I typed. And If I do see this guy ripping down signs, I will call the police. While it is odd that the individual is compelled to remove the lamp-post signs, doing so IS LEGAL, right? But when he litters them it is not.

So, calling the cops on the guy? What the hell? For littering?

I may be a statistical outlier, but I have called the cops *one* time: because a pimp or john was beating a crackhead whore outside my workplace and she was screaming for help. It was in an industrial area, deserted at night, except for some occasional drugs and sex trade. I felt I might be the only one who could make the call (this was before the cell phone era), and that it could save the woman’s life. In my book, THAT is a reason to call the police.

The police did come quickly. Thankfully they were available and not preoccupied with some bullshit complaint. GREAT JOB COPS!

I understand he has an exception to his sign removal activity - doesn't remove signs that say Lost Cat or Dog.

actually, somewhere in the archives is a posting from this man's sister. she tells people he's mentally ill, she asks people not to hurt him, etc etc. don't have time to search for it, but that's why he's doing it
