In what way is it unfair to get serious about their late rules?

If you got that, that means you're probably not the kind of member they want. Multiple lateness can and eventually will lead to termination. Consider that your last warning.
It doesn't matter that you call when you're late and you pay the late fee with no complaints. You greatly inconvenience other members who pay good money to use THAT car for when they booked it.

All this seems like so much arseing about.

I think I would buy a car before I went in for this.

Hey, you got the $$ for it, then it certainly is an entirely _different_ set of headaches...

First of all... I was just venting. Rules are rules and yeah... I broke them by being late. But, since this is obviously a generic letter that never indicated that I A) called numerous times when I was running late to extend or warn the next person B) Have not been late over the last 5 times I used the vechiles.

Oh and thanks Whatchuwant... I kind of figured that out myself when I read the letter.

I totally understand that I am inconveniencing people when I am running late… which is why I try to lessen there inconvenience by having zip car contact them. I’ve had to wait 30+ mins for someone to return there car so I obviously understand.

I was just posting to let people know that yes, Zip Car will punish you when your late numerous times. I will edit my post accordingly...

it's a pretty bitchy letter, even if they have a point about lateness being bad. personally, i'd rather get a letter that says "you've been late a lot; here's our new policy," instead of a guilt-tripping lecture about early worms. it's a business, not my faux-cheerful 4th grade teacher, right? reminds me of dolores umbridge.

<-- zipcar member. never been late.

    But-

    BUT-

    That would be _SO_ un-Zipcar!!!

Do you get the eighteen million emails they send? They _all_ have that tone.

    It's like, their thing.

See: "For instance, if you return the car back late (a very big no-no) you will be charged a penalty."

    A big no-no?!?

Anyhow, that seems to be part of their business model for propagating the whole "community" idea, I don't see _that_ changing anytime soon.

Their marketing strategy is gorilla, street style. Kinda like a friend of yours who has this company, see, and they wanna be cool which you.

A friend that wants your money.

    Suck ups.

If my friend talked to me like that, I'd smack him upside the head with two curved phones and a big bottle of Guinness! With girth!
    Suck ups.
    "It certainly does suck!"

just show up on time. what's so hard about that? Tardiness sucks. It is grounds for dismissal at any gig, so why not at Zipcar?

You were on-time your "last 5 times"? What, and you want a medal? Or better yet, you want a hand written note delivered to your door thanking you for following the rules? . I know you are just venting, but those on the other end of your lateness have a lot more reason for venting than you. Seriously, if you are ever late when I'm waiting, you'll get a lot worse than a f'king condescending letter. This is one of those things that sends me off the deep end.

I just wish people would be more respectful of the cars, they are so damn filthy. I wonder how often Zipcar comes out to clean...by the looks of it rarely.

    Just venting.

Supposedly, they clean the cars once a week, more if they get a call regarding a particularly bad car (turnaround: 1 night).

But cleaning crew either don't do it or do shit job. Still get paid.

Thought you were exclusively skating the board, Ian?

Pitu: It's a belief that as membership has grown, the cars' cleanliness has declined. To be expected though, if more people are using the cars, more people to trash the cars.

    Got a Zipcar newsletter today....
    late, late, never great

As we welcome new members into the Zipcar family, it becomes increasingly important that everyone respect the rules of the community. Many of our members rely on Zipcars to take them to the doctor, or get them to important meetings. When you're late, you leave the next member in a tough spot. So if you are running behind (no matter the reason), always call 866.494.7227 and let us know. We can't waive the $50/hr fine for being late and inconveniencing another Zipster, but it does give us the chance to help.

We also have a few tips for staying timely:
    1. Plan for traffic.
    2. Sign up for text alerts so we can give you a nudge when your reservation is coming to an end.
    3. Visit zipcar.com on your mobile device to check if your car is available and extend your reservation.
