Brooklyn Ave and Dean St

I just put in an application in a beautiful apartment at Brooklyn Ave at Dean. The building was well maintained and beautiful inside. I was wondering if anyone lives in the building or nearby and has any thoughts on the area?

My ex lives a block away and I really like that northern New York Ave/Brooklyn Ave area. Folks seem older and quieter, less rowdyness (crime, drug dealing) - at least that is my impression.

I live around the corner on Bergen and I've never been bothered. During the summer there are probably 3-4 sleepless nights where a local neighbor likes to play their music until 3am.

However, that really is my biggest complaint and there are larger things one can complain about.

I live in the building and I really like it. Most of the neighbors are friendly. It's quiet and there is an active tenants association. We are even having a get to know your neighbors BBQ soon.

AIDS building? No, however, I think there's a halfway house on Brooklyn Av. BTW Dean and Pacific. They seem pretty harmless.

I'm glad to hear such positive feedback. It seems like a super tight knit building. A local cafe` owner also lives there and we asked him about it. He sounded super positive about living there.

So tonight a friend told me she lived on Kingston and Pacific for a year and a half and was mugged by a bunch of teenagers - granted, it was 3 AM and she was walking alone. But it got me thinking - how safe is the walk from the Kingston-Throop C stop to Brooklyn and Dean in the evenings? Brooklyn is such a quiet avenue and my avenue right now is pretty bumpin' so I think all that quietness would make me nervous. Has anyone has any problems? I know Atlantic/Fulton is kind of a disaster but I see lots of cops patrolling which makes me feel safer. Will cops ever walk you home if you ask them to? She also suggested that if it is late at night to take a cab from downtown Brooklyn to my house and it would only be about 8 bucks.

Just now generally curious about that quiet walk at night, whether or late or before midnight. Thanks all.

At 3am - generally most areas of Brooklyn will be quiet - not just the corner of Brooklyn and Dean. I don't think it is so much the neighborhood to blame in this particular case, but walking alone at 3am in Brooklyn. This goes for all areas for all people. If you scan through quite a few of the mugging posts, you'll find that a large amount of them occur between the hours of 2am and 4am. People are asleep in bed and there are less likely to come to the rescue.

If you are asking about 'evenings' being before 9pm, you should be fairly safe. If you are asking if you are safe walking home by yourself at 3am - probably not.

As I mentioned earlier - I live around the corner on Bergen and I feel safe walking home up until around somewhere between 11pm and midnight, later then that and I take a cab.

Unfortunately, muggings happen everywhere. On these boards there have been tons reported in prospect heights proper as well as most other neighborhoods.

I'm not sure if there are any more or less in this area than in others, your friend's incident may have just been an isolated one.

KWAC, there is that group home of some sort (crazy house)on the corner of St Marks and Brooklyn across from the museum. Is that what you were thinking of? Those people are real f-ing nuts.

What the hell's up with all the paranoia going around lately? I live at New York and Bergen and often come home late at night (12 am to 2am) from the A/C, 2/3/4/5, or even just walking from as far as Park Slope and I've yet to have an incident. I know it's always a possibility, but it is everywhere in new York City and for the most part I've had a positive experience living in Crown Heights. I don't know about the Kingston Throop stop but I have no problems going to and from Nostrand BL.

I am totally paranoid. I think because I have witnessed so much violent crime in NYC (and unfortunately have the 911 phone records to prove it) that I am just traumatized by any move. I'll get over it soon enough. Thanks for the advice ya'll.

I use to live at 97 Brooklyn Avenue, now in Clinton Hill. I was sexually molested in my apartment by an intruder while living there. So be very careful. Especially if you live on the first or second floor.

I just realized what place KWAC is thinking of and BTW, they are not harmless. I've been in that place enough times to know that they are not at all harmless.

oy vey. To what extent to I need to be concerned? My ex just lives one block away on Pacific and Brooklyn and everything seemed fine, though quiet.....

It was several years ago. The intruder came through the window. I lived in that neighborhood for about five years. You can get extremely comfortable because it has a tendency to be quiet especially on Brooklyn Avenue. Since for there are mostly private homes in the immediate area. You should be especially cautious when walking to and from the Nostrand or Kingston Avenue stations at night or when it gets dark early during the winter.

I am so sorry to hear that. Very scary, about the window. It does seem very quiet and peaceful over there.

Do you have a suggested "safe" route home from the train station(s)?

Sorry to bear more bad news but that is the same building where a tenant was sexually assaulted this August by an intruder as reported in this forum. Not sure what that amounts to in terms of a pattern but folks should be aware.

Oh my g-d that is horrible. Jesus christ. I was told there was a mugging in August but I didn't know there was a sexual assault. Besides just being generally aware, what else can I do?

Take a self-defense course. You obviously have self-security issues (many women do...not an insult, just an observation) and maybe it'll help you feel safer.

Any suggestions on where to take self defense classes?

Try the YMCA on Bedford and Monroe.
