Argentinean Doctor Needs room to rent on Park Slope/ PH $500

My husbands cousin is 26 and is finishing her Doctors Residency here in Manhattan, She needs to rent a room, shes looking to spend $500. She is Quiet, Clean and will be working most of the time. She prefers a living situation with women or a married couple. Please if you have any let us know ASAP. She has already begun school and is staying with us on our couch. I feel bad and want to see here get cozy and settled in our lovely neighborhood.

$500 is going to be really, really hard to find in Park Slope, even though it's for a share.

I don't see this happening in Park Slope or PH for $500. Count yourself extremely lucky if you do find something.

I have a friend that rents a room on 5th ave by union st for $550 and its around 8X7 and has no windows.

and she was lucky to find that.

The price range you state needs a miracle behind it to find.
Best bet would be try another neighborhood in Brooklyn.
hate to be just so frank but it is waste of time to even look in PS and hope to find even a share for $500 a month.

It would be impossible to find a room in PS for $500. Maybe she can find a place next to her school (as long as its not NYU).

You might find a room or rent controlled apartment for $500/month near Columbia University, in Manhattan between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue between 100th and 140th Streets.

I would let her stay at my place, but given her school situation its probably not a good idea since women have a tendency to get pregnant over here... everyone wants a piece of the SJB... wait, thats $500 a week right?

Never say never - I found one of the few great deals right in the middle of PS and I would have never done so had I listened to everyone I knew telling me to give up & that I'd never find something. Her best bet might be to try more on the edge like the Gowanus area - 3rd or 4th Ave. Even then @ $500 - ouch.

She's not asking for an apartment share, just a room! maybe someone has an extra room in their house that she can sleep in for $500 a month.

Realistically a furnished room in PS.. no cooking, shared bathroom is gonna be somewhere between $650-$750 depending on location and size of room. Not to be harsh but $500 in this neighborhood would not get you a closet to sleep in.

out of curiosity I did a quick search on cl and there IS a room for $500 on 7th and 11th. Looks like it would fit a single bed and a little shelf - totally a place to sleep and that's it. She should jump on it.

There is also spanish culture in Washington Heights. Cheap as well.

Sweetie if you get rid of one of your kids then charge at least $650 for that room!

Not really......... I mean, Argentinians do speak Spanish........ and what was the point of saying she's an Argentinian doctor if not to find some relation to either thing?

we just looked for a room for a friend - to get her off our couch as well - and she really wanted to be close to us, but we had to raise her budget up to 800 to even find something worthwhile in PS. She did see lots of rooms in Sunset Park around the 500 range.

Yeah, that's more of a Buenos Aires ("porteño") thing. The vast majority of Argentines are not of italian descent and are not light-skinned, either. Actually, they're quite indigenous-looking. Which is why many porteños refer to them as "blackheads" ("cabecitas negras") for their lack of blonde hair and other "European" features. (Yes, I was once married to an Argentine, too.)

As for a reason the OP felt the need to mention the potential renter is Argentine, maybe the Dr. is a "porteña". And since they are viewed by most Latin Americans--as well as their fellow countrymen--as arrogant, self-centered, and not easy to get along with...or maybe she was hoping to room w/Spanish-speaking folks. In any event...

As for a bit more info on why I added 'Argentine' in the title was completlely for the fact that she would be comfortable in a spanish speaking home. No more, no less.

A few places but nothing in PS/PH. She's comfortable in our place so chances are she'll never find a place. But what can you do? She's family and we don't feel comfortable pushing her out.

How is it that she can only afford $500 while in residency, if you don't mind my asking? Standard pay is at least $40K/year, she ought to be able to double that rent at least which would obviously give way more options if not her own apartment.

She was trying to save money. She will be paying close to twice her original budget. She had zero clue about rents and we even warned her that her budget was too low. She is from a small town in Argentina so she considered 500 dollars an extravagant amount.

Most residencies in New York City pay over $50k.

Feeling like I may not be reading this thread correctl.

So she did find a place but near twice the $500 budget?

On the side.. residets may make $50,000 but the debts they incur in medical school are stil there looming in the background.
