Subject: Where to watch Friday's debate?

Manhattan Drinking Liberally and the Young Democrats are sponsoring an event at The Tank in Chinatown, but I'd prefer something a little closer to home.

Does anyone know of a place in PS or PH that's planning on showing it? I just called The Commonwealth in PS, which normally will show political events, but since it's a Friday the bartender wasn't 100% sure (I can post something once I get a definite answer).

So, in the meantime, I'm curious if anyone's heard of anywhere else that's going to be showing it.

Thanks!

I'm almost sure that David will be showing it over at Tavern on Nostrand in CH. Every time there's been a debate (democratic) and I've been in there its been on.

I'm a bit of a bus ride from there but if I can't find anything near me all are welcome to come watch at my apt. Beer and rowdy comments are welcome/encouraged.

There's an Obama watch party at Cafe Shane on Washington that night - I think I'm gonna go to that one.

    what a plonk.

Nobody in Washington thinks for a minute that he is crucial to them getting a deal done. Neither candidate has voted in months, and suddenly he thinks people are struggling to make decisions without him? Coming from man who said the fundamentals of the economy were sound only a week ago, it is laughable that he seeks to cancel a presidential debate to join a process that has been chugging along well enough without him.

Postpone it once, then what happens if something else comes up at the time of the rescheduled debate, like maybe North Korea saying more bad things? McCain bails again? Can this imbecile not multi-task?

The responsible thing for both Senators to do would be to get their As*es back to Washignton and dig us out of this billoniare's hole.

Whomever extends their hand toward the other over a bandaid first gets my vote.

McCain is trying to cancel the debate so that the Vice Presidential debate scheduled for next week is replaced by a make-up Presidential debate. In other words Palin is not far up enough on the learning curve to handle Biden.

    America First, my ass.

neither senator has cast a senate vote in months [mccain:5, obama:2]. the senate has still functioned, at least in relative terms. neither are on the committees working on the bail-out and would not be substantively involved in it. and both senators have access to transportation that would allow them to fully participate in all upcoming senate activities, attend the debate, and then return to dc, if necessary, to resume senate activities. unless, of course, one of them has a more compelling agenda and reason for cancelling. just sayin'

Also, this would be an excellent time to have your stand-in, the person you have chosen to fill you position should anything happen to you, step up to the plate. Also, just saying.

    Obama nails it:

Obama wrote: And I think that it is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once.

Yah, like Obama said, no biggie. If they need him, they'll call him. He's got a big plane with slogans painted on the side and all. It isn't like these things don't happen everyday or anything, there are always lots of things going on.

Uh oh! The war in Afghanistan and Iraq is going on longer than imagined and more troops are being sent! Better have McCain and Obama return to Washington so they can help iron this fiasco out.

On the plus side, Biden will be prevented from sticking his foot further in his mouth, should the VP debate not happen...
Joe Biden wrote: I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”
Joe Biden wrote: In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian Americans - moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking.
Or my personal favorite, when he told Sen. Chuck Graham of Columbia, who is bound to a wheelchair, "Chuck, stand up, let the people see you." Lol.

Highlights include a) describing FDR going on TV following the '29 crash (when neither he was president, nor TV existed) and b) stating that he'd use his Baretta to stop Obama from taking his guns away from him. After seeing that, I'm not so sure it's a bad idea to cancel the VP debate next week... well, unless it was for purely comedic purposes.

thanks for that. i think many people forget what a scary-ass impulse-dyscontrolled man biden can be. especially when excited or anxious or defensive. he needs a leash and muzzle and teleprompter to be not-detrimental.

Nice one. A VP debate will probably be boring, but perhaps Palin's sheer ineptitude will prod a infamous Biden Truism. _That_ would be entertaining, and amusing.

Former President Bill Clinton believes John McCain’s move to suspend his campaign and push back Friday’s scheduled debate was made in “good faith” and not “because he’s afraid” to debate Barack Obama.

“I presume he did that in good faith,” Clinton said on Good Morning America, recalling that McCain had “asked for more debates to go all around the country.”

“I don't think we ought to overly parse that. Just let's deal with this issue,” the former president said. “We know he didn't do it because he's afraid, because Senator McCain wanted more debates.”

Clinton said on NBC’s “Today Show” that McCain is “looking for some way of, once again, to say to the American people, ‘Hey, I'm not a traditional Republican. And I do take this seriously.’ Because otherwise this makes it much, much more difficult for him to win because this is associated with lax regulation and the absence of economic activity in this period.”
But yah. The debate is on.
The outcome was up in the air Friday as lawmakers scrambled to agree on a plan.

But by midday, McCain's campaign said the Republican presidential nominee believed enough progress had been made for him to travel to Mississippi to participate in the debate, set for 9 p.m. ET at the University of Mississippi campus.

"He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including Rep. [Roy] Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans," the campaign said in a statement.

"The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the senator will travel to the debate this afternoon."
