    The one on 5th Ave near JJ Byrne park (soon to be renamed George Washington Park I believe). Yes - it is called Bagel World.

    Ok, this entire time I thought you were talking about the place on 5th Avenue and 4th Street across from JJ Byrne park-that place is called Bagel World. Gee, I have been hating the wrong bagel place for an entire day now

    again, i'm trying to find the name of the place (found:bagelfactory)) and i'm going to go through the entire thread and change it. the whole thread. and if i were catholic, i'd go to confession. and if you want me to go to bagel world and apologize to the owners in person, i will do so.

    Ohhhhhh, yeah, the whole time I was defending Bagel World, on 5th and 4th St...not that it changes my argument, but I would have conceded the point a lot easier if I wasn't motivated by loyalty to my favorite breakfast spot :)

    more so, i specifically asked for the owner, asked if he was the one who made the whole wheat bagels, asked if the flour was only whole wheat, and then told him i needed to know because i am allergic to white flour. (again, i have a small intolerance/sensitivity. anyone with issues like this will tell you that unless you tell food prep people that you're deathly allergic--the same goes for people on this board, as i've noticed--they don't take you seriously.)

    the owner lied to me, pure and simple. it wasn't some counter guy or bus boy, it was the owner who told me he made the bagels himself. i don't think that's acceptable.
    He probably used the white flour, but I have seen (and have bought) white whole-wheat flour. It's from a white grain. You can use it as you would normal white flour (although I would not attempt any complicated baking with it) with only a small difference in weight and texture.

    Still, if I would not be surprised at all to find white flour in bagels. As someone with a food allergy, I have found that some people either tell you what they think that you want to hear, or make up an answer on the spot to an ingredients inquiry. It's only when they are pressed "Gee, how do you make your bagels with ONLY whole-wheat flour? How do you keep them from becoming too dense?" that you can tell.

    No offense, but in light of the economy and the fact that some of us just lost jobs and a whole bunch of life savings, complaining about a sub par bagel seems petty.

    I almost cried at work the other day over what is going on in the world. :(
    And it's hard for me not to be constantly worrying about finances and whether I'll have a job next year.
    Constantly.
    It's the kind of stress that is keeping my shoulders tense and my heart rate up all the time.
    And it is very much outside of my control.

    So sometimes it is nice to think about other things.
    And for me this thread is an amusing and interesting diversion.
    For some of us it is a serious issue:
    I'm a vegetarian who has to over-question people all the time to try to avoid meat and meat products in food they cook and sell.
    I have to trust them.
    And I far prefer whole grains; simple carbs put me to sleep, like chaplin'smom, so I only eat them at night.
    Additionally, the story is entertainingly told, I think!
    And I like listening to respectful debates.
    And it's not a "sub par bagel" at issue.
    It's a lie. A relatively petty lie, but a LIE even so.

    This is not as serious an issue as the economy, or the war, or any number of other issues.
    Believe me - I think about those things a LOT.
    It is a more managable issue though.
    A nice distraction.

    I dunno. I saw a homeless guy get tazered today near the Trader Joes. I'm not feeling the love in the economy. I am friends with the Bagel World people, and don't feel great about them getting mistakenly identified in this.

    This bagel thing is hardly a crime against humanity, and is probably not a "lie". Unless the bagel place grinds the flour themselves, there is no way for them to know what the ratio of whole wheat to white flour was in the mix. Perhaps it was a mistake - like the OP made in identifying the place. Maybe i just don't share the same sense of humor or see why this is funny.
