Subject: helicopter circling over my block--what's the deal

He's circled like 20 times and they're searching for something below Eastern Pkwy, near Franklin, less than a block from where the bands were playing for the Panamanian Parade.

If they're are just doing this to intimidate people and clear them out after the parade they oughta...well, things I shouldn't say on a public forum. This is outrageous, feels like I'm living in a freaking war zone.

not to mention...what about the good ole failing economy? who's paying for all that chopper fuel?

no kidding, this is half an hour now over the same spot--it's the block right at Eastern and Franklin on the South side, around Union, from my window I can see over to Eastern to one of the roofs they keep shining the light on. They better have a reason for doing this.

Maybe they are tracking someone on the rooftops?

I only wish this was a money-wasting intimidation tactic. Unfortunately there was an outbreak of some sort of violence on Union and Franklin. From my window I watched one guy try and hit a police officer before getting taken down, smart fellow that he is. Now they're tracking somebody, as the last poster suggested. Sadly, your bleeding hearts are no use to you here, this is another instance of Crown Heights violence, not a pointless manuever by the NYPD.

I just walked down there. There was a fight and one of the participants hit a cop when they tried to break it up.

So, of course, they're responding with overwhelming force to get everyone to fuck off.

Not sure it's a bad idea though. Usually one fight begets more and then someone gets poked up or worse.

They have Franklin taped off about 1/3 the way down south of E Pkwy you can't go down there.

    Fuck this bird is loud.

I didn't hear annything about tracking anyone from the shop owners I talked to who saw the thing go down, I think they're just trying to intimdate so no one gets any ideas -- "hey he hit a cop, maybe I should too" etc.

The police officer was hit by an object thrown off one of the rooftops. They are using helicopters to search the roofs. The PO had a serious laceration and was taken to Kings County Hospital.

cccc seems to have the inside scoop on a lot of these crime related posts, so I cede to him.

What kind of an a hole would do that?

I'm sorry but...I stand by my case. A cop gets hit and they send two or three helicopters to circle around for no known reason for over an hour?

Ahh damn , so that's what the fuck they were doing??

I looked out the window and they were shinning the light at this one building on Franklin and there was this guy standing out on his fire escape , and they shined it down right on him and so I thought maybe he was like gonna jump or something and that's why they were sitting in the fuckin same spot for like ever!! Then I thought maybe people were still hanging out after the parade and they were trying to get the crowds to disperse.

I was trying to take a damn nap-I wanted to fucking scream at them to get the fuck outta here. Damn!!!!!!!!

Well , since they kept me from napping and gave me a freakin headache ,I hope it was worth it and they found the asshole that throws shit off a roof top , wtf? Imagine walking by and you get hit from something coming down outta nowhere? That would hurt. Whatta sick bastard.

A police officer was indeed injured tonight when he was struck in the head by some type of object thrown from a roof or window.

A Police Officer was once killed in this city when he was hit on the head by a spackle bucket that was thrown from a roof. That type of incident will never be allowed to be repeated in this city!

    MOD NOTE:

i've edited a couple of these posts to remove name-calling and other deliberately inflammatory bits.

    please keep it civil.

    thank you.

it's all so "Polo Grounds" (a huge NYCHA project located in Harlem). There, wherever an ambulance would come (say, to take a elderly heart attack victim to the hospital) the police would have to escort the EMTs because of people throwing stuff out of high windows at them.

The situation was so tense that the police would have there guns drawn, pointed up at the apartments "as a threat" to people who might throw stuff.

..it would be almost impossible for a cop to shoot a person with a 9mm given the angle, etc. but it seemed to be a tactic of last resort. To my knowledge, they never fired a shot at the residents, despite witnessing lots of stuff thrown at them.

...you don't have to like the police, but to throw crap at EMTs or police that are there on medical calls? The situation was a low scale war.

(writer had the opportunity to visit Polo Grounds twice a week for four years '98 - 2004. Please note that -like Crown Heights- 99.9% of the people were not involved in said "war")

I would never be cop in this city.

If you notice, for whatever reason, this is nowhere in the news.

cops are injured pretty frequently ...it might not be newsworthy.

if the media covered all crimes, they'd have time for little else. Besides, Crown Heights has been in the news enough lately...

Based on the address in the article, this "genius" threw a cinder block from the roof of his own building. ...or at least very close by .

Anyone want to guess how stoned he was?

All I know is, I think I just figured out a good way to deal with the drug dealers who pull up under my window in the middle of the night blasting Jamaican hip-hop. Anyone know where to buy cinder blocks wholesale?
