Landlord gift?

Do you give your landlord a holiday gift?

Mine lives in the same small three unit building and hardly does anything for us. They don't clean the common areas, but they do deal with the trash and recycling although not always on time. We pay billions of dollars it seems, a year, and I wish he was like my old ll who gave US wine for the holidays.

Anyway, they don't celebrate the holidays. Do we have to give them anything?

I don't think tipping a landlord is necessary. If you have a Super that does the building cleaning, maintainence, etc., a tip at the holidays is usually a nice thing to do.

I know they come up every year, sorry to be tiresome.

In my case, the LL would be the super, but he doesn't really do much for us.

And they don't drink alcohol. (Probably best cuz I drink enough for the whole building.) And they eat stuff I can't pronounce so don't want to do food..............

How about a christmas/holiday card? with a nice note. It's the thought that counts.

If your landlord/super doesn't do much during the year, then a tip really isn't warranted (IMHO). Regardless of what they normally eat, a cake or a lb. of cookies from a nice bakery is usually a welcome little gift at the holidays (just to keep on their good side). Good luck with whatever you decide to do (I know it can actually be stressful).

OK, ok, I will put aside the passive agressive note I had planned for Monday's rent and put the check in a card instead. Maybe with some of this party mix my roommate males.

I do give a card with some cash for Christmas to the super. Somehow I always move right before Christmas so I've only been here two months....

I am thinking $20 from my roommate and $20 from me seems reasonable - thoughts?

Give the landlord a gift? It normally is the other way around. I used to get a bottle of wine from my previous landlord.

I couldn't imagine giving a landlord a gift. You pay him rent!

in my last apartment the super sucked ass. shocking, i know. every year for xmas i'd go to my mom's and grab a bottle of "canadian club" from my mom's liquor cabinet (our creepy uncle marc gave it to us), then i'd regift it to mike the super. after a few years he stopped thanking me, so i stopped giving.

My vote is ixnay the iftgay (that would be a "no" for the non-bilingual). Why? They do no more than the minimum required, don't celebrate the holiday and it doesn't sound as though you have a friendly personal relationship w/them (granted, my inference). If you do anything at all, I think you're on the right track w/the rent-check-in-a-nice-card. The relationship btwn you and your LL sounds strictly business, so unless they've gone out of their way for you or provided any extras in the way of service or comfort, they haven't *earned* anything besides the billion-dollar rent.

Hvg said that--and admittedly I'm something of a cynic--the reasonably-priced tin of cookies thing suggested abv might not be a terrible idea IF you think it might result in a mopped hallway or repaired door buzzer (er, sorry, my issues). But, of course, you'd be the best judge of that, as you know them. That way--card or cookies--you sate your inclination (again my inference) to extend the tidings of the season AND learn whether doing so will grease the wheels ard your bldg a little.

In your case I would say no. They hardly do anything for you and they don't even celebrate.

I've exchanged small gifts like wine or cookies, only when I've lived in 2-3 unit buildings. It's more like exchanging cookies with neighbors tho.

I've never given a landlord a gift...and from the sound of yours, why would you. He doesn't even provide the services that your rent should be covering.

Seriously, this thread should be locked! I work for 6 different LLs and have never heard of of any of them receiving gifts from tenants. Some of them would be considered nice people if you didn't know they were Landords but I don't think they would consider a Xmas present anything other then a pathetic bribe to not throw them out somewhere down the road. Is it the alcohol or maybe the crack pipe talking?
