I hope that someday cable companies and the various networks will be forced to offer their channels a la carte. For people like my husband and I, we'd save soooo much money. We could eliminate all of the sports/shopping/religious channels, for starters. Think of the money that could be saved!

i'm over at the dish site now, looking at packages (didn't know they were cheaper than direct) and i'm not loving the packages. unless i get an HD package--and i don't have an HD TV, nor do i see us getting one anytime soon--the other packages don't have stuff like bravo. i don't think any of the plans have sundance, IFC.

looks like i'm staying with direct

If your husband doesn't like sports, you've got bigger problems than a cable bill.

Um... more time to watch cooking shows, well-written comedy shows, movies and bad sci-fi is a problem? Sure, if you say so.

FWIIW I pay $40 for phone, unlimited local, regional, and long distance with call waiting, caller ID, and voice mail + $29.99 for DSL + $16 for tax and other charges to Verizon. I get about 3 mbps if I use an Ethernet port on my router and 1.5 mbps (download speeds) if I use wireless connection to the router. I have no problem using my work VPN at the 1.5 mbps but then I'm on a terminal server. if you get Earthlink you still have to have Verizon infrastructure.

I'm getting average 12mbs down. Huge difference!

I should mention that I was at about 8mb down, but then upgrade to TW Turbo, and now am getting 12+ down regularly

Is Disney by any chance one of the 19 channels to be dropped? I hope so.

Um... wow. That's really, really bad. If they go forward with this in NYC, I'm dropping cable internet service, at the minimum.

Nothing is imminent in NYC, it seems:

In a strategy that's likely to rankle consumers but be copied by competitors, Time Warner Cable (TWC) is pressing ahead with a plan to charge Internet customers based on how much Web data they consume. Starting next month, the company will introduce tiered pricing in several markets.

In April, Time Warner Cable will begin collecting information on its customers' Internet use in the Texas cities of Austin and San Antonio and in Rochester, N.Y. Consumption billing will begin in those cities later this summer. In Greensboro, N.C., the billing changes will begin sooner. Spun off from Time Warner (TWX) this month, Time Warner Cable had been testing a plan to meter Internet usage in Beaumont, Tex., since last year.

Basically, all the cable companies are panicking as people cut their cable service down to basic and watch everything on Hulu and Roku and Netflix and Amazon instant.

And what will they do after FIOS becomes available nationwide, and all of their customers leave?

They are making themselves less attractive to consumers just as their monopolies are eroding... not smart business.

Just curious, but how can they unilaterally change the terms of the contracts with their customers? Must be a 'greed' clause in the fine print on the back, right next to the 'entitled to provide subpar service' clause .

It's already starting to be available in parts of Prospect Heights, much sooner than I had originally heard. Apparently Internet only without TV for now.

Hulu and instant netflix keep me entertained. Time warner cable always crashes -- the last time I had it the cable guy was here every other month.

Well, Hulu, Roku, Xbox Live, etc all require broadband internet to work... I think it is for that reason precisely why TWC is thinking of upping their charges. So much video content streaming through their lines is no doubt taxing their capabilities. That, and they see potential for huge new revenues to be made by charging for this high-bandwidth usage.

TWC service has been mostly fine for us... I do think they should eliminate franchise monopolies nationwide though so we get some serious competition.
