F or R train morning rush hour question

How early do I need to get on the F train on a wednesday morning so that its not packs, or almost packed. So I might get a seat even? I HATE the subway and get really anxious on it sometimes. Anyhow I could take the R instead.
opinions?

it sucks balls. Don't even bother going to sleep so that you can be on it early enough

i get on at 15th street at 7:15, and i almost always get a seat. however, it's also almost always one of the last seats availble. if you're getting on at 7th ave, you may have to leave earlier. one caveat, so hopefully someone else will chime in: i get on the last car, since my exit requires me to be there. it's a popular car. if you choose a car that is not near an exit, it will most likely be emptier than another, more desirable one.

I get on at Ft Hamilton Parkway. If I'm on by 8 AM I usually get a seat but any spares are taken at 15th st

Agreed. 6:50 should be your goal.

So you only have to take the F on Wednesdays? If only!

Do you have a bum leg? (Seriously, do you?)

The R or M are not as crowded but take way longer, and if you must x-fer to an N, D or anything else yr back in the same boat (car?)

They're all crowded. It's Rush Hour, not Happy Hour, Welcome to Brooklyn, Where People Live.

I think the OP recognizes that they are all crowded... but there is a huge difference between 6:50 and 8:00.

I realize the trains are crowded and I enjoy all the people in this city... People make the city interesting. I just don't like subways. I have been trapped on them before and its not fun. I have to be at 57th Broadway area at 7:30 - 8am. I wanted to be prepared and pick the right train. I was hoping to here is the F was not so bad that early in the day. I know better then to take the F train at 8:45.....

Take the M train if you can.

Agreed, if time is no object and you're just concerned about having a relatively empty subway car, you can take give yourself an extra 15 minutes and take the R all the way. Since it's local the whole way, it empties out at every express transfer point.

The R is slow moving but almost never as crowded as the F or the N. The M (by the time I see it) is a ghost town. I will never understand why they give brand new trains to a line with no riders.

    so they stay brand new?

    So logical! Damn it.

it's like using the good china: you don't use it because you don't want to ruin it.

But brand new M trains are kind of like not using your good china but running it through the dishwasher anyway.

i don't know about that trick.

personally, i use my good stuff most days. (at least the silver, i don't have china. i mean i did, but i sold it)

I get on the F around 8:15 am at 7th Avenue, and get seating at Jay Street or before 85% of the time.

I'd do R to Atlantic and transfer to B/D.

The transfer will give your mind something else to ponder and it is a much faster route.

I find 7 a.m. is the cutoff for a guaranteed seat on the F at 7th Avenue. After that, you might get a seat and you might not - it will depend on the model of train and whether there have been delays, etc.

You should never leave on the hour, as most people tend to do that and the trains are most crowded. Try leaving at 5-10 minutes to the hour and there will be less people.

Does anyone know why the F on the ride home seems so much worse/less frequent than the morning ride? I don't get on until 8 during the rush and it's not half as bad as the crowd waiting at W. 4th at 6:30...

    I take F from 15 St/BK to 34 st/Manhattan. It's pretty packed from 8am on.

I take the F at 730-8 and its extremely rare I don't get a seat. Its always more crowded going home but I usually have a seat then as well.
