Movie Theater

lots of old movie theaters along Eastern Parkway, if we want to take this thread there.

...most of them are now very large houses of worship.

lots of defunct movie palaces on Flatbush Ave on other side of the park..

i can't confirm, but it's very possible. i'm told that if you go back long enough (to before people had tv's in their houses) there were just movie theaters all over the place

i'm told there actually use to be two movie theaters at bartel pritchord square, both in operation at the the same time. there was the sanders (which is in the space where the pavilion is now) and another theater right on the other side of the circle where where those red apartment buildings are now

i'm also told the supermarket on 9th st between 5th & 6th ave was once a movie theater

We have a winner.

Old Goat here. The RKO Prospect was indeed on 9th Street just down from the YMCA. The Sanders (now the Pavillion) in Bartel Pritchard squareThe Avon (Now I believe a McDonalds) was just below 5th Ave & 9th St. The Globe was on 15th St just above 5th Ave, the 16th St Theater was on 16th St just below 5th ave and the Minerva was on 7th ave around 14th Street. There was never a 2nd theater at Bartel Pritchard Square to the best of my knowledge and Memory. (I go back to the 30's 40's, 50's and early 60's I would rate the theaters as follows.
#1 RKO Prospect- Rich interior, carpeted nice seats & a few cents more then the others. (Had a sign painted on the top of the building that read "Talking Motion Pictures")Had a magnificent organ and had "sing along with the bouncing ball"
#2 Sanders. Just a few cents less then the prospect but in those days it had a decent size screen and of course like all the Theaters it was just ONE theater with ONE screen. No multiplex. Was kept up very well.
3. The Globe. Saturday afternoon mad house with every kid in the neighborhood there. They used to issue different colored tickets according to what time you came in. If the Matron could tell from the ticket that you already saw the TWO main features, about 5 cartoons, 2 serials and Coming attractions she threw you out!
4. The Avon. Like the Globe but smaller. and the floor a little stickier.
5. The Minerva. Tiny theater about the size of a decent size retail store.
6. The 16th Street. The dump of the area. I think they cleaned it once a month whether it needed it or not. Once saw a rat run across the stage.

The prices at these theaters ranged from low of 10 cents to about 15 cents in the 40's. That of course was for matinees.

i was told that clothing store on 5th ave between 12th & 13th st was once a movie theater. the sign looks like it was once a movie theatre sign

Hey Yankee Fan, Sorry but I lived on 12th Street between 5th & 6th Aves from 1933-1960. If there was a movie theater on 5th Ave between 12th & 13th Streets it had to be before 1933 or after 1960. In fact the largest Clothing store on 5th Ave was Belmonts which was between 11th & 10th or 10th & 9th St. Was a great store. Gave sporrting equipment or games to kids when their parents bought them clothes. It was on the same side of 5th Ave as Neergards. By the way. Neergards was at its current location as long as I can remember!.

I asked this question before but I will try again. Does anyone know what became of the beautiful clock that stood on the sidewalk outside Germains? It bonged at fifteen minute intervels and bonged the hours quite loud. I worked across the street in the Palace Meat Market after school and on Saturdays, Used to keep time by listening to that clock!
