There is a place on Broome and Mott that has great Bahn Mi and they are big. Like half a full size baggette. There's also a couple great places in Sunset Park.

Still, glad to have Hanco's in the hood.

John Hodgman tweeted earlier that he was at Hanco's for lunch today. He said it was good, but not life changing.

Yeah, I think of traditional Bahn Mi as being more snack size. These are a meal. As for the salads - we had the vermicelli - it was delicious and was also meal size or splittable several ways as a side. The bubble tea was the only bummer - it was good but too expensive, at those prices we wont (often) get one again.

I was at Hancos again today for lunch but didn't see John Hodgman. I did, however, have a really really really delicious sandwich.

what time do they open tomorrow? I got $7 right here.....

No sheep Zooka, you do not have $7 right here. You are eating lunch at home. Now back to work!!

My boyfriend and I went the other night. We got the classic and the pork, and two garden rolls. All yummy - but I had a horrible allergic reaction to something. Hives, stopped-up nose, runny eyes. Which made me sad because the sandwiches were awesome!

Finally popped my Hanco's cherry and was impressed and not impressed.

First of all, as far as tastiness goes, big win. Extremely tasty Got a medium. will get a spicy next time. Meat is delicious and the crunchy cilantro was great.

Thought the sandwich was really small....have to get a side or appy if it's dinner, maybe at lunchtime it would be enough.

Service was kinda sketchy - just cause your number is lower doesn't mean you will get served faster. The girl shouting out orders for pick up was incomprehensible, but cute so OK whatever.

Overall review: I liked it but I need to get the right combo of food to be sated.

So let me get this straight: $7 bahn mi????

That's outrageous! It's $5 at the other Hanco's and at Vicky's. Shit I can get one in chinatown for $3. count me out on this one.

    It's $6.25 at the other Hanco's, I believe.

They are so good... but I totally agree.

I agree in theory, but Hanco's is a couple of blocks away. Chinatown - not so close; and I would gladly pay someone the $4 difference to not have to make that kind of a trek for a tasty sandwich. As I see it, it all evens out.

Furthermore - it's friggen expensive around here - have you noticed how many small business are shutting down? If they need to charge an extra buck and change (from the other location) to cover the increased overhead so be it. I'd rather have a close source for bahn mi than the difference.

i hope the owners read this. i really want them to do well. there's been vietnamese sandwich cravings in these parts for a while now!

honestly, even dropping the price by 25 cents would help. $6.75 sounds much less expensive than 7.00.

drop the price a dollar per sandwich, and i bet they'll get more business...

perhaps they're doing just fine as is.

Wow, didn't realize the other one was $5.25 (could have sworn I saw it at $6.25). That's a pretty ridiculous difference. An increase makes sense in this neighborhood, but to that extreme?

I agree...I was so excited before they opened, and was expecting to go all the time. But at this price I would start considering other options. Also it took forever for them to make my two sandwiches when I went on the opening day. On top of that, the summer roll I bought had no basil in it

I don't mean to sound really negative. I will go back from time to time. I just wish they can step up a bit.

Come on guys. What makes you think there are no Vietnamese food in park slope for years??? Vietnamese food is cheap everywhere and expected to be cheap by everyone, this is why no owners are willing to take the risk in park slope due to the high rent. I would rather pay the higher price than taking the train to chinatown. When you factor the time and the subway fare, it is not that bad.

i just went in to pick up a menu around 1:30, and it was mobbed.

I wish there was a Vietnamese restaurant a la L'Annam around here...anyone know of one that delivers?

Agree with the general comments here - food good to very good, price high for what you get. My shredded chicken sandwich, medium spicy, was perfect but if I hadn't gotten the summer rolls to go with it, it would not have been a full meal. There were only three customers waiting (6PM Friday night) and the service was still incredibly slow and a bit confused - two phone-in orders that were called in after I ordered were prepared first, and the order number on your receipt is not always how the cashier is going to call out the order when it's ready.

I like that everything is prepared to order, but they definitely don't have smooth assembly-line production down yet; and the cashier should NOT be going back and forth between the prep area, the phone and handling money without changing her plastic gloves, eewwww.

Subject: Am I the only one who thought the banh mi poor to middling?

I stopped in here when I was in Park Slope anyway and this place is not worth a trip. Maybe ok if you're in the hood since there aren't other Banh Mi options, but I got the grilled pork (the standard I get at Ba Xuyen in Sunset Park), and was extremely underwhelmed.

First, it was maybe 2/3 the size of the Ba Xuyen, and Ba Xuyen is $3.75. The vegies were as if wadded up into a small mass and so you didn't get that delicious crunchy vegetableness with the pork, and it was mostly carrot (yawn). The pork was kind of chewy, and I swear I heard the microwave going "ting" and I suspect that's why, and there was just something wrong tasting about the sauce.

If you're coming from somewhere else, there is absolutely no reason to make this a special trip. Go to Ba Xuyen -- D train to 9th ave, then walk over to 7th ave @ 43rd. You'll save a couple bucks and get a far, far superior banh mi.

Ate there with wife and kid. Underwhelmed. Tasted OK, small portion, even for small wife. Will not be back.

So I guess they heard all the complaints. They had a sign on the window as I walked by this afternoon saying all their sandwiches are now $6.50.

Getting to the more reasonable arena.

I really like these sandwiches, and having the shop across the street is also a plus. But the wait is ridiculous, and I hope they figure out how to speed things up. I'm also now very excited to try the Ba Xuyen shop as soon as possible. I think these sandwiches are addictive!

I always get 2 bahns no matter where I go. I'm not rich, but I never noticed the prices--as I'm always happy to get EXACTLY what I want.
    Hanco's-Classic=Awesome
    Bubble Tea=Eh
Overall=I'll stick with the 2 Classics and be happy there's a big, open space for me to enjoy them.

Hanco's is pretty tasty but the prices are more than what you'd find in Chinatown or Sunset Park. The real problem is the service.

I went in there last Saturday and they took my order and gave me a slip of paper with #101 written on it. They were calling out #75. Foolishly I thought that maybe they had their own numbering system but, alas, I was wrong. 35 minutes later I got my sandwich. Other people were all standing around and sitting at tables just waiting too. Some would get their food and snit at the little girl behind the counter. Kinda rude but it shouldn't take 35 minutes to make a sandwich. From now on I'll just have them deliver.
