Oh gee, I hope for something good and useful, but, experience tells me otherwise.

We could really use another nail salon or cell phone store.

    Fingers crossed.

Way too small a place, unfortunately. I think I'd die from happiness if a TJ's moved in a half-block from me.

In other news, anyone see the bit in the brooklyn paper about movement on the whole foods site?

No, I read a brooklyn paper just yesterday and didn't see a word.. The last I heard, they needed help with that spot because the cleanup was more than they expected.

And, Hollywood Video is too small? yeah, you are right, I thought that spot where D2 moved into would have been big enough, or, the old Aaron's spot further up 5th Avenue. Too bad.

Heh -- you're not the only one. I was praying for a TJ's when Eckerd's closed.

I kind of wish that was still a hollywood video. I would love to have a vid store with more selection than the one up n 7th (although they are super cheap!)

They should close down that terrible Jennifer Leather store, takeover both spots and open a whole foods or a TJs please.

i've been praying for the same thing to happen with the two huge places for rent on the corner of berkeley and 7th. close the ace supermarket and make that whole space a tj's!

or at least a gourmet garage or an amish market or something...

i'll be interested to hear what comes in the hollywood video place...it is indeed a rather large space...

what's the problem with the ace? it's a mainstay of the community.
  • belzjm

ace is fine, but they have no good produce and not a very nice selection of food. it's basically good for beer and cigarettes. if it's not going to upgrade the store itself or the merchandise at all, i find that large space it takes up a waste.

it hasn't changed with the neighborhood at all. do you ever get more than a couple things there? it's certainly not conducive to real grocery shopping.

the ace is an honestly-operated, family-run business.

I don't think it was ever meant to be a real grocery store, i think it's purpose, just like the Met across from 321 is to be a larger than normal neighborhood deli. Where people can buy certain things. they are good for beer, soda, paper stuff, frozen foods, etc. Would I do a regular grocery shop there? no, but they are handy for things here and there. How should it have changed with the neighborhood/ do they not sell enough natural, good for you crunchy foods?

    it's called ace supermarket.

good supermarkets in affluent areas don't smell like dead bodies and have 3 pieces of rotting fruit as their produce section.

never said it wasn't an honest business. but this is 2009. the store is a relic and needs to update.

i don't need natural, organic or any of that stuff. there are plenty of other great places for those items in this neighborhood.

what would be nice is fresh fruit/veggies.

you guys can love it all you like, i buy beer there and i'd be MORE than happy to buy more there, if it wasn't such a depressing place to buy food.

i love the people who think that just because something has been here for an eternity that they don't need to be upheld to a modicum of standards.

go find me another neighborhood "supermarket" nestled between 3 million dollar homes and 3000 a month 2 bedroom apartments that looks like ace does.

Umm, the met? they look pretty much the same, though, their fruit might be a tad better, LOL!
  • belzjm

i think the MET is better. smells worse, but produce is definitely better.
even the new 24 hour deli that just opened on 7th between union and president is much better. and the korean deli across from ace is better.

i live in a building very close to ace with a handful of old timers...some have lived in the building for more than 40 years.

NONE of them go to ace.

i guess they do fine though. they are still there. i'll continue getting my beer and bounty paper towels there, but it would just be nice to have a little more to choose from for such a large space.

anyway, we've hijacked this thread. hopefully someone knows what's coming into the hollywood video space.

    perhaps ace is expanding...?? ;-)

Ace and the Met are not grocery stores. They are certainly not supermarkets. They are "convenience" stores, like 7/11, open longer hours than supermarkets and selling stuff at prices higher than supermarkets, to people (like me) who are too lazy to walk the extra few blocks to get to the supermarket.

what is "the ace"? Someone gimme a block location.

So Mom and Pop stores are good only if they live up to your standards?
  • belzjm
    belzjm
mom and pops are awesome. i shop at them whenever possible.

    ace is not great, however.

that's my opinion. i'm entitled to mine, just like you are to yours.

So, your entire definition of what makes a good 'market" has to do with the produce they sell? Because other than the produce at the Met being better, I don't see the difference between them and Ace.

I went to Rossman's today. I can't believe it took me 12 years and Potter dragging met there to get with the program!
