I'm guessing this must be going into the space that was formerly "Lola". Looking forward to trying the much-hyped Stumptown coffee...!

Am I remembering Lola being a spanish type restaurant space that had some music in the back from time to time? Before a business goes under I want to at least recognize THAT incarnation BEFORE THE SPACE MOVES ON THE ANOTHER LIFETIME.

Not in this case - Lola was a short-lived clothing store.

They had some nice (and sometimes pricy) things, but never had a huge amount to choose from. Started to lose it when they became yet another store selling fancy candles (IMHO).

THAT was Stumptown coffee? I stopped in to that place for an emergency cup and couldn't drink it. Piss weak, and the vague taste it did have was unpleasant.

every cup of stumptown i've ever had (at getfresh and stumptown itself in portland, oregon) was quite strong and delicious.

don't know...maybe you had a bad batch or something. weird.

I don't get it. All these wonderful places are moving into the South Slope on 7th avenue, yet the economy is tanking. Am I missing something here?

i'm guessing that landlords are finally wising up and lowering rents...

with all the coffee shops opening as of late, i read a really interesting article about how starbucks was the one who got a lot of americans into the idea of having coffee outside the home. then the mediocre places came in after that, and now the really excellent coffee places have started to filter into the city.

this happened years ago on the west coast...in seattle and in portland. no REAL coffee person in seattle drinks starbucks. it's not great coffee.

it's the evolution of coffee drinking and here in nyc, we've been way behind.

it's about time we finally get some great coffee in this city. and as you'll notice, starbucks is closing shops here, while independents seem to be flourishing...

As someone from Portland, I will add that Stumptown really is great coffee. I saw a stumptown sign at a cafe on Court St and nearly tripped over my own feet in disbelief. To say that coffee in NYC isn't that great is a pretty severe understatement.

did you know that the guy who started stumptown is actually leaving portland and moving to carroll gardens? maybe he already did.

he's opening up a stumptown plant in red hook and i have a feeling that stumptowns in nyc are not too far behind...one coming to red hook and the new ace hotel in manhattan soon...

last year it was La Colombe. this year it's Stumptown. what will be next year's cooler-than-you coffee?

Trois Pommes is apparantly brewing Stumptown, and I decided to see what the hype was. What I got tasted a lot like Gorilla, so either Stumptown tastes a lot like Gorilla, or they just plain liiiiiiied.

They liiiiiied! Gorilla is brewed a whole lot darker than Stumptown from what I've tasted.

I'm in love with Stumptown coffee...their Ethiopian Sidamo is some of the best ever. Not over-roasted, just full-bodied goodness.

I've been very loyal to my favorite coffee roaster, Terroir (if anyone here knows Boston coffee, it's the stuff from the former owner of The Coffee Connection), but I can't afford to have coffee shipped to me. Stumptown is the closest I've come to that and I'm totally happy to have it in the neighborhood.

I'm not shilling--I just really like the stuff!

Don't you understand? It is not just the coffee beans that make great coffee, it is someone behind the bar preparing it that makes it great. Using clean machines, proper grind, extraction, etc... If you take Stumptown, brew it at the wrong temp, serve it from a dirty pump pot, let it sit around for hours it is going to taste as bad as La Colombe. Sure Grumpy is great, they do everything right in the way they do coffee but did you know we have a great coffee shop, South Side on 6th ave. and 19th is every bit as good as Grumpy.

So true. Gorilla is great @Gorilla, and much *less* great everywhere else that serves it.

Well, babel, no one can deny what you've said is true. However, as someone who has worked through the years at many coffee shops serving coffees varying greatly in quality, I'll still swear that great coffee absolutely must begin with great beans, and those beans have to be roasted to bring out the best flavors found within. This is where Starbucks absolutely fails. Every.Single.Time.

That said, I am a huuuge fan of South Side...not only their coffee, but their presentation. Those guys know what they're doing. Now that it's warmer, I won't mind the mile-plus walk there.

As much as I love Southside, I'm not going to complain when another great coffee place moves into my neighborhood. It's exactly what 7th Ave needs down here. So freaking excited!

Just a small update from Brownstoner today, the big news is that it will be equipped with TWO Clover Machines. Check out this article from Wired about this machine that coffee connoisseurs say is the brewing machine.

The Brownstoner article links to TONY, which has Grumpy listed under its June 11-17 restaurant openings. If that's true, then hoo-freaking-ray!

Anyone talk to them? Last time NYmag listed Brookvin as opening like a month before it actually did.

walked by this morning and they looked ready to open. Maybe this weekend? I should have asked...

when I walked by last night their door was open and it looked like they were doing some meet and greet with passers-by, though I saw someone trying some coffee.

They are indeed OPEN. I went by last night and they were giving out free coffee - anything on the menu - to anyone who came in. I had a lovely capuccino. Went back this morning for another.. no longer free.
