Space on the northwest corner of Vanderbilt and Bergen?

While cycling yesterday, I noticed that the old hardware store on the northwest corner of Vanderbilt and Bergen is showing signs of renovation. Could my dream of four corners of bars be nearing reality? I hope so. The weather is warming and we need more drinking options in the neighborhood.

There was a public notice up on the wall for some time now which states that it will be an "alcohol serving establishment" so your dreams may be coming true

they work permits also stipulate something the effect of "Ventilation from first floor to roof" ...which sounds alot like a commercial kitchen.

When you include the back part (where the lumber and concrete was...), its a big space.

One man's dream is another man's nightmare. It's going to be the loudest effing corner in brooklyn.

Anyone know what the deal is with the SW corner, the one across from Beast, and apparently now owned by them. Wasn't this supposed to be a country western bar?

    Subject: corner near Beast

I spoke to the manager of Beast - I don't know about the theme, but they are trying to open by May (one year later than planned). She mentioned it to me because I was talking about playing jazz at Beast in January, and she thought it'd be a better vibe there once they opened...

That's great news! I know they've been working on this for a while, so hearing that it might come to fruition is good.

still, it might increase the amount of free wi-fi in the area.

    From gothamist:

"Apparently, the old hardware store on the corner of Vanderbilt and Bergen (across from tapas mainstay Beast) is being renovated and will reopen as a huge, 150-seat, old Brooklyn-style restaurant called The Vanderbilt (above), perhaps in the style of Williamsburg’s Dressler. A liquor license application for 570 Vanderbilt has been filed with the State Liquor Authority; 150 seats is a lot, even for the neighborhood. More details as they become available. "

That doesn't sound like a country/western bar - or is the new Beast venture on eastern side of Vanderbilt?

The Beast venture is due to open, at least from what I've heard, on the southest corner of Bergen and Vanderbilt. The space discussed in this thread is on the northwest corner. But, yes, 150 seats is quite large for this neighborhood. Does this mean that we've arrived?

150 diners walking to the far end of Vandy?

I'd say we've arrived. The Beast is doing well...

Anyone have an update on this restaurant? I remember that it is supposed to open this Fall, but would appreciate any info that anyone might have.

Funny, I think of it as the new hardware store. It's only been there about 10 years, it was a bodega before that.

I was by there last night, and paused in front of the door. They are working away on it, and it seems to be at the level that the floor is down and chairs and tables are present.

this is going to be a very special restaurant, so i'm cool if they take a little longer than expected to open.

since saul bolton AND ben daitz are involved, this place is going to end up becoming a destination restaurant, i think.

today, from a seemingly impeccable source, i heard early october. apparently the space is pretty much ready; they're just waiting on permits.

They looked closer than ever to opening when I walked past this morning...Oct is definitely a possibility.

I just tried it! There were a few opening day miscues, but that's understandable and I won't focus on them. The space is great, the atmosphere is lively, and the staff are really nice. Some of the food was great- Mrs. C's and my favorites were the hangar steak, the boudin blanc and the crispy pigs feet. All in all, a great addition to the neighborhood, and I can't wait to try it again in a few weeks when they've had a chance to work things out a little better.

Also, the bar looks to be a triple threat, with a nice selection of wine, beers and cocktails, as well as a limited food selection. I anticipate that the bar space will be perpetually crowded.

So, Carny- do you think it's going to be much competition for Beast?

I think it's already the best restaurant on Vanderbilt, and they haven't hit their stride yet. Very different vibe than Beast though, so I'm not sure they're in direct competition. I think Beast will still have a niche because it is way more laid back and neighborhood-y. Also, more good restaurants on Vanderbilt means more business for everyone as people get drawn to the strip. It's not a zero sum game.

I went opening night too. Not bad. Such a large turnout. Hangar steak was great. Pork Belly and Merguez were just okay. [as said somewhere -- this is a meat eaters joint] Apple turnover was good. Fun place. Good cocktails and beer. Definitely going to do well.
