new coffee shop on st marks and washington

and thus far a lack of strollers....oops might have jinxed myself

Can't wait to try this place - I'm close to Ortine but don't like their coffee. How late are they open? Everything 'round these parts closes so early (save for the bars, of course).

Dropped in the other day and picked up some beans. I liked the laid-back vibe, but I'm not completely sold on the beans... they're somewhere in the neighborhood as twice as expensive as Gorilla and I still haven't gotten a great pull out of them... Admittedly, I need to keep trying to fine-tune my grind and tamp, but I can't be THAT far off... FWIW, wife likes the absolute lack of bitterness, but I'm finding it lacking in character. We'll see how it goes.

Sweet Tea, those photos make me want to go out on a "site visit". Can't wait to try this place!

Yep, no strollers yet... I took my 3 month old in a sling.

We went on Sunday morning and the soy latte was delish. Guy behind the counter was nice. I'll go back.

I stopped by today after having lunch across the street. I just had a cup of coffee, but liked the place a lot. I'm excited that when the internet I steal goes out, I won't have to drag my ass all the way over to Joyce.

All I tried was the drip and found it was pretty weak. Heard a lot about this Stumptown coffee but what I tasted was nothing to write home about.

I'm posting from Sit and Wonder as we speak..my third trip here this week. I actually really like the decor--it's way more laid back in here than Joyce...haven't seen ANY strollers...can sit for hours with my one iced coffee and no one bothers me...tons of outlets for laptops and the staff are super friendly and the coffee is delish.

I'm also extremely grateful to not have to schlep all the way to Flatbush for Heights Coffee now

Stumbled in half asleep this morning with hopes to buy a pound of stumptown. The girl at the counter said they haven't got their grinder in, and since I don't have one at home I just got a coffee and the date bread I saw a picture of earlier in the post. Both were delicious!! Can't wait to sit and write/read there. The pastries do look like they're from Choice, which I love, especially because I suspect Choice Atlantic stuff (block away from me) is day old. I usually alternate between Outpost and Ortine because my apt's on the border between PH and CH, but I'm definitely going to add this to the mix. I love the atmosphere too, and the fact that they have both chairs and couches to choose from. Maybe they'll add some sandwiches and stuff in the future?? Is it just me, or does anyone else feel a little uncomfortable about the table service at Ortine? They're always totally cool when I just want a coffee, but I always feel guilty about not ordering food. I should just get over it. Anyway, props to Sit and Wonder, especially once they get that grinder!

Just checked this out the other day, I like it. I agree with the poster who said the coffee is a little weak, but for a dollar, I'm not complaining too much I guess. It's definitely comfortable, and the guy behind the counter was nice.

I was wondering based on the comments about weak coffee, has anyone ever actually asked a proprietor to make their coffee stronger?

was there with my stroller (and its occupant) today. iced coffee was great - odd because it looked weak in terms of color, but tasted perfect. dude behind the counter was super sweet.

So back in 1997, I started an organic coffee roastery and cafe in Northern California. It's still there and wins awards for its coffee all the time. Since moving to NY I've dealt with a lot of bad coffee. It's really a shame. Anyone who wants to serve good coffee should really learn the basics from the SCAA or at least look here: http://www.thecoffeefaq.com/1thebasics.html I haven't tried the place mentioned above, but I really hope they don't turn into another Prospect Perk or Heights Coffee that serves hot toilet water instead of quality coffee.

some people like weak coffee. or as i like to say, i don't even like coffee. but i do like strong black water, and lots of it.

I am loving Sit & Wonder! I, and a few other neighborhood writer pals, are perpetually hunting for the perfect place to sip and write for long stretches of the day. In the past it's been Joyce (too pricey, no plugs, and too many strollers, not enough tables), Heights Coffee (crap coffee, too crowded), then Abigail, which is great, but still a bit pricey. I think I found a winner.

still a toss up between sit & wonder and ortine's, only 3 blocks apart. i live in the middle. pretty much if i'm hungry, i go to ortine's and eat (omg the shakshuka and huevos rancheros) and drink bottomless coffee. and if i'm not, sit & wonder all the way. great to have them both around.

I tried Sit and Wonder yesterday and loved it, especially the cozy chair and sofa in the back. It got crowded very quickly, so I gather that business is going to be good!

I thought that I'd post a positive word since I was less than enthusiastic previously -

I stopped in and got a latte and muffin the other day. A) the latte was very good, but still a little lighter than I'm used to muffin was great C) I think that it's great that they're open at 7AM - finally a coffee shop owner in the neighborhood that doesn't have his head up his ass in this regard.

a (hyphenated) word in praise of their iced coffee: cold-brewed. not quite as good as NOLA iced coffee, but a fair sight better than anything else i've had around here.

the drip coffee is not so great, though.

wow. i can't believe that a pretty cup of coffee like this lives around the corner form me. i've got to venture over to washington more often!
