Mosquitoes

Am posting this from my yard where I am drenched in OFF with picaridin in it. I have at least 6 bites in the past 30 mins.

The mosquito "trap" I bought had caught nothing.

I empty all standing water from my plants every day.

I give up.

Anytime you feel like breaking down and trying what has been proven to work, I can lend you some DEET.

I am pretty sure I tried some DEET stuff too.

If it works, I'll try it again. One of the fuckers just bit me in between my toes.


Please bring it over with some kalbi and I'll light the charcoal :-)

Ok, I bought some Deep Woods off with 25% DEET. If this doesn't do it, I'm just too sweet for this world.

They had 7, 17 and 25%. I am bringing out the big guns. Good thing I don't want kids, or they'd likely come out with 2 heads after I spray this shit all over me

between our "skeetervac", our neighbors bug zapper, fan and incense, and my husband spraying something most likely toxic on the plants, we've seen a decrease in the mosquitoes this year. It takes a village.

nope. it's true. i actually saw one skeeter come in for a landing and when he hit the DEET force field, he went away. It seriously smells foul, though

I believe that they're not spraying so far this year, because there have been no reported West Nile cases and no trapped mosquitoes found carrying the virus. Since the long-term effect of aerial spraying isn't really known (but is probably not good), it's only done in response to the presence of West Nile. That is, it's not done if mosquitoes are just a nuisance, but only when they're verified to be a public health problem.

I can't remember the last time a mosquito bit me. I wear perfume and a lot of dark clothes too. I agree with using Deet and I have heard some people use dryer sheets. Tuck a few in your socks and shirt. Just remember to remove before leaving house

Speaking of dryer sheets if you happen to wash and dry your clothes and there was gum in your pockets, dryer sheets will remove all the dried gum stuck to your dryer. Just rub and rub, it works great.

Do a google search for Asian tiger mosquitoes -- an invasive species, introduced to the U.S. in 1985 and now widespread in the south and east coast. Smaller than our native mosquitoes, and they bite day and night. I've positively identified the ones in my yard as this species. They have black and white stripes on their legs.

I don't see any spraying scheduled in Brooklyn, nor any WNV cases this year or last.

I definitely have some of the Asian mosquitoes as well....They keep trying to land on my computer and i see their black and white legs. Bastards!

Wow. I am wearing the OFF fan and so far am very impressed. Been out here 4 hours and only have ONE new bite. It's a little pricey (about $12 and lasts 12 hours. I haven't checked to see how much refills cost), but worth it. Sitting in the yard, next to my OFF fan. One bite so far, but the fan takes a few minutes to start working - so I guess the fuckers got me. The weird thing is that the bites only itch for a few hours and then stop.

Unlike bed bug bites that itch like crazy for weeks.

I found them at the atlantic center target a while back...they're with the camping stuff.

Oh, I may get one of those fans! I know I saw them at Target a week or two back so they may have refills (in a back corner of garden stuff).

Bug rant: just got back from visiting family in the south and got skeeter bites, chigger bites (I hate chiggers--they bite the most annoying places like under the wasteband and socks), and some rash that might be mild poison ivy

It works really well so far, but already close to needing a refill. I was by ACE Hardware in the city, but they were out of them.

Leopoldi's on 5th at 8th St. had a box of the refills but it looked like they were out of the fans.

Misplaced rave: I love that store, btw. Sometimes it's crowded or takes a few minutes to get help, but they are always helpful and friendly. It's the kind of hardware store you can go to and describe your problem/product without knowing the correct terms and they can usually understand and assist. Oh, and it's the only place that has consistently made key copies that actually all work! (Pintchik and Tarzian have bit hit on miss on keys for me.)
