PH and little kids

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Moving to PH from Manhattan and would like to hear from parents of little ones. How is the neighborhood experience for families? I know the access to park/library/gardens etc make it great, but would like to get a better sense of the parent community and neighborhood vibe when it comes to families.
Thanks

Excellent environment for youngsters. Lots going on. The fairly recently completed Underhill Playground @ Prospect is a focal point. And
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PHeightsParents/
    is worth joining.

Things can change block by block, or even building by building. But for me, Prospect Heights is a glorious place for my wife & my 11 month-old & me. We have a bunch of friends with babies around the same age, and I can't believe how lucky I am in so many ways.

Father of a 4-month old here. We have several friends with babies in the neighborhood and constantly see/meet new folks with kids on the street. It's a very open community, parents seem willing to say hello and mingle. Of course, we're only 4 months in so we don't have much experience yet. But I'd say it's a great place for kids.

Park Slope is MUCH better for families. I would move there.

I moved to PH 5+ years ago with a four-year-old and then had a second kid...lots of young families, playground activity and a decent local public school...

I find PS to be drearily militant in the aggression of it's "family-ness"...

I was just browsing this site the other day. Very cool! I also have a young child and we found that Prospect Heights so far has been a great place to live. Here is a post I found that may be helpful to you.

you wanna be green?? your reusable grocery bags arent doing crap. in increasing order, four things you can do that actually matter:

    4. throw away your air conditioner. you dont need it. really.
    3. dont drink bottled water. ever.
    2. live in an dense urban environment. rely on public transport, etc. CHECK.
    1. dont have kids. overpopulation of the planet is THE cause of our environmental, and many other, problems.

sorry, random rant. not saying no one should have kids. i might like to have one or two myself one day. just think about it.

As someone else implied, if you think overpopulation is the problem, why don't you just swallow a handful of pills?

Oh that's right. You are special.

I used to think about that. Then I read some compelling articles about intelligent educated liberal people most likely to solve those problems having the lowest birthrates and thus being a shrinking demographic in OECD countries, most of which have reached stagnant or below replacement fertility rates.

Yeah, I keep hearing how children are a necessary evil to propogate the species. I just don't think we're giving human cloning the chance it deserves.

    Subject: more reasons to avoid

other reasons to avoid prospect heights with young children:

    - loud dominican music played at all hours of day or night
    - fast cars racing down streets
    - lack of organic food at grocery stores and bodegas
    - your friends will never visit you
    - SO far away from manhattan
    - architecturally displeasing, most of it
    - increasing number of bars on vandy and washington ave
    - overpriced
    - did i mention the double murder from a couple of weeks ago?
    - practically crown heights.
    - cablevision
    - surly hipsters and happily childless folks staring at you

loud music is one thing, but loud dominican music is quite another. keep the kids away.

    fail
    - surly hipsters and happily childless folks staring at you
now i'm just gonna keep staring at you

I want you to move, live and enjoy everything with your family. Always remember to live by life's simple rules. Don't bring your kid to bars,if you want to bring his empty stroller full of porn and cartons of smokes to the pub, cool. Put him down for a nap and wheel over the goodies. If you go anyplace that has sports on TV make a U-turn and BYOB at the playground. Don't stroll and talk on the phone while crossing the street. Don't ask your child what they want more than one time a day. If your child is yelling or crying in a bar or cafe act like you are upset and take the little love outside for some air or snow or quiet time or a time out,go buy him a watch or new shoes. Always feed your child bacon and say the word "organic" as his little mouth clamps down on a pork flavored delight. Always keep a lighter and some loosies in your diaper bag in case during a change of "poopie" pants or an" I want to go home" cry those around you can be comforted by a soothing smoke. Park Slope is for kids.

Ahhh. The sounds of the self serving child hating jerks. The world belongs only to you and you an only. We need a draft to thin out the herds.

This part I'm all in favor of, and my baby agrees. Matter of fact, the little'un enjoyed her first taste of BBQ Minke Whale steak on the weekend, and it was definitely organic.
