Subject: Why isn't the bar/lounge 95 South mixed??

Why isn't 95 South on Franklin more mixed? They have amazing music and you can dance. Its right around the corner from Franklin Park which I think is also great, and Franklin Park always has a mixed crowd, but 95 South has a mostly black crowd.

And has nothing to do with the crowd there being unwelcoming, because the one time I ever saw it was the night Obama was elected, and a large group of white paraders went into 95 S to watch the election on the giant tvs and the regular crowd there was friendly and everyone was dancing together and having a ball.

It sucks that while so black local neighbors will go to a mostly white or mixed bar but so many white newer residents are unwilling to patronize black owned businesses.

I know some of us are, "I'm not racist; my best friend is black," pc liberals, but maybe we can find a way to be a bit more open minded and willing to end the segregation that still exists. It's almost 2010!

sometimes it's also too loud inside FP, too. i like to sit outside there, so i can hear my friends talk.

When I tried to go on a Saturday night, it was no cover for my friend who is black, and $10 for me. I am not black.

I wholeheartedly agree with Sweet Tea. Its not a matter of it being a black or a white owned business, its where you feel comfortable.

I don't like 95 South because the drinks are too expensive and I'm not a fan of the crowd AND they charge cover sometimes. I like Franklin Park because it's chill, has cheaper drinks and a much more pleasant vibe. I'm black.

My white friend and I went one evening only to be COMPLETELY ignored by the bartender (a chick with her unattractive tits hanging out). There were 2 of them in fact, along with a barback. The bar itself isn't that big, and granted they were busy, but the fact is, they moved like molasses. Add that on with the fact that after standing there patiently for 15 minutes, she went literally right over my head to the guy standing behind me to take his order! Fuck. That.

We walked out and I bitched to the doorman who went to get the manager and then I bitched to him. He tried to get us back in, but who needs it?!?! Music is too loud to talk and I refuse to be ignored by some shitty bartender. Based on my experience, it wasn't a black/white thing though- it was a male/female thing. She wanted tips from guys. She can suck it.

it's too loud for what it is that i want to do at a bar-- namely, have a beer and catch up w/ the folks i'm with.

it basically occupies that undesirable zone of not big enough (or with good enough sound) to be a dance place, and too loud to be a bar.

how's the brunch at this joint? i see signs for their brunch and i assume they don't blast music during a weekend brunch hour. maybe that's a good time for the sound-sensitives to check it out.

$10 to get into anywhere seems steep in our 'hood. that must be the only crown heights establishment charging people at the door or am i wrong?

Essence Lounge on Atlantic and Troy charges on weekends. And I think the gay bar on Nostrand charges too, especially when they have a performer.

Not to say 95 South is a drug den. But there are shootings and shit there. With the abundance of bars around (isnt FP right around the corner) I don't see why ANYONE would want to go to 95S. The mundaneity of partying at generic hipster bars trumps standing in a boring spot with loud abrasive music and the high possibility of a shoot out every time. I love my people, but somehow we have lost our ability to have a good time.

To be honest, I only ate there twice but the food really sucked. And its true that Franklin Park is mixed, so, you guys are right; its not about a black/white thing.

There is also a bar similar to 95 South i think a few blocks away on bedford/st marks (Brooklyn Exposure i think its called) that has (or had) a reallly loud Karaoke night on wednesdays which was not mixed at all (and yes there have been fights and dangerous incidents) but on Sunday afternoons they had live jazz and it was mixed.

$10 cover for a bar in Prospect Heights? Damn, I didn't know that. No wonder Franklin Park is the new Bembe, or SODA!

It would be really cool is if 95 South had jazz sometimes. Or Franklin Park, but i guess if they are a bit pricey, they're doing so well they dont need to try to attract more customers.

Franklin Park does have a mix of black/white, but i don't think the black crowd at Franklin Park is the same demographic as the crowd at 95.

Anyway, it looks like they did have music nights in the winter - http://franklinparkbrooklyn.com/category/events/ (bottom of the page) - maybe they'll come back with requests? I know they have readings on Monday nights which are on hiatus until fall, but I haven't been to them yet. Anyone know?
