ok, i've been following this thread and here's what i don't get... why didn't the OP hand the next renters a stack of cash so they could fill the car? aside form being late (which happens), i think the bigger issue is that he sacked them with buying tons of gas.

    Zipcar pays for gas.

There's a credit card in the car. When you use it the machines prompt you for other info, such as the odometer reading and your member number.

Returning a Zip car late and without gas is just rude.

Hey, sorry I'm late, everyone....you wouldn't believe the traffic jam I ran into on the internets.

    What'd I miss???

It isn't his fault he wasn't here for the above (he has 2400 baud modem).

The rest of us now have an obligation to repeat everything we've previously wrote. (oh wait, that was already happening)

    Classic.

Man. I for one hope that pokersloper gets stuck in traffic the second he pulls out of the lot. And then sits in traffic for his entire alloted time.

    MAT,

I am looking forward to zipping in my zip car. However, I will not be surprised if a little traffic comes my zip way. It is NYC after all. Also, if I royally mess up, I am fully prepared to call other people's children ugly. That should free me from the burdens of having to consider that I messed up.

zip car, "six simple rules, so simple, but such an important part of our community"

Rule 4 - "Fill 'er Up - Always leave at least a 1/4 tank"

Rule 5 - "Return on Time - Late fees start at $50"

    http://www.zipcar.com/6simplerules/

It looks like being part of the zip car community means that members are required to consider other members in that community. I am glad we joined. The rules are simple.

I'm a long-time member also - seems to me your first mistake was not calling Zipcar to tell them your situation - failing that what did you expect? If I were waiting on you I would have been super pissed - and would have called Zipcar, if for no other reason, to let them know my reservation started late and I wouldn't pay for the lost time.

I'm totally amazed at the almost complete disregard for established agreements between members and zipcars - I get it way too many cars that have had dogs and cats in them, have less than a 1/4 tank of gas and that are filthy (shame on drivers and zipcar for that!)

Despite all that - it's still the greatest convenience ever and with so many more garages in PS I can always find a car close by. And it beats owning a car!

All you Zipcar renters here, be really careful if you ever get into an accident

i got tapped by a cab (in a pickup truck, no less, so the damage was basically a bent chrome bumper) in traffic... i recorded all the info, sent it to zipcar, etc.

after 18 months of "investigating", zipcar and their insurance notified me that the they were unable to find the other party, so i was responsible for the $500 deductible

and i'm not the only one that's gotten screwed... google zipcar accidents, and the zipcar renter is often paying the deductible when not at fault

I actually have zero interest in zip car, but my wife seems to think it is the way to go. I would rather just go down to Enterprise and rent a car.
