Just moved from Manhattan, and I used to get my tree just on the street corner... I haven't seen any Christmas trees up and down the avenues.... how and where do you buy a tree here in South Slope?

:D There's a good selection at cheap prices at Lowes. $25 for a 6 foot tree I think. We were there on saturday and they have a bunch of them. 2nd ave & 10th - 12th st.

Shannon Florist has a really good selection and not-crazy prices (like some park slope sellers).

They're on Ft Hamilton across from the cemetery entrance.

If you want a really terrific, fresh tree try Greenpoint Trees. They aren't cheap, but boy are they good. What sold us was - they deliver! Here's their web site:

I was going to pick up a tree this weekend from the guy outside CVS until I walked by yesterday and a lady was looking at a 5-6 foot spruce and they guy said it was $110! WTF? I've never purchased a Christmas tree in the Slope...is this normal? This was not a big tree.

the trees sold in p. slope are outrageously expensive and not very nice. best to go to lowe's or home depot.

There are Christmas trees growing in Prospect Park. Just go up to the top of that mount across from the Quaker graveyard and you'll see them. I have a hatchet if you need one.

I, too, moved from Manhattan and am missing our old tree sellers on 2nd and 89th. Alas.

I've done some investigating in the hood and found that the Hardware store on 7th ave at 2nd street is selling all their trees for $65! There is a stand outside of the Market on the corner of Garfield and 7th. They are priced by height- from $50-75 as far as I can tell. I was going to check out CVS today, but am scared by a post. We are going tonight and may go to the stand on 5th Ave in front of Key Foods- we asked about prices last night- can probably get a decent 5-6 foot tree for $50. I'll look into Lowes, but it may be too far to carry it home...

Let me know what you choose...I'm heading out on Saturday and I would love to find a nice Douglas or Balsam without hoofing it all the way to Lowes.

Gothamist just posted a handy guide to Christmas trees in every neighborhood:

I just bought a nice fraser fir from the stand outside Key Food on 5th ave. At its height with the tall last branch, it's about 7 feet tall. $50. Really nice woman selling them. She showed us one that would have been great, too- about 6 feet, but not as full for $40. I would recommend them. So happy to have found a new, friendly neighborhood Christmas tree seller! Deck the Halls!

Oh, and I stopped by CVS on 9th Street the way home from work. He was showing me some 5-6 feet, irregular shaped trees for $60.

The CVS guy is hit-or-miss. We've paid a LOT for trees from him before, but last year, when we were absolutely broke and I was almost in tears because of what we could afford (yes, I know that's lame, but it was what it was), he sold us a 6' full tree for what he was attempting to sell 3-4' trees for. I guess pathetic works sometimes.

I noticed a guy selling Christmas trees on 8th ave and 8th (across from St Saviour elementary school,) right near the new dog store on the corner.

Hmmm...I'll have to check this 8/8th spot out but I'm leaning toward the Key Food on Fifth...ah who knows...I'll probably end up drunk at High Dive and picking up an overpriced tree on the way home.

Subject: Good Place to buy a Xmas Tree in Prospect Hts

So my roommate and I are also new to the neighborhood and went looking for our tree on Flatbush near Prospect Place this morning. We went to three places: Key Foods, the Natural Market and a french dude in front of Duane Reed. Hands down the dude in front of Duane Reed was the best. His name is Emanuel. He was very sweet and endured us asking him to stand nearly every tree up for us to see better. We bought a huge beautiful tree from him for $70 (we have really high ceilings). The slightly smaller trees were super reasonable ($45-$55) and the same tree as ours was easily $85 at the other two places.

Good Luck to all and Happy Holidays!

Just walked from 10th Ave/16th St and felt like I saw trees everywhere.

16th St between 10th/PPW, 8th/8th guy had a lot of trees and they smelled really good, 7th Ave deli on 7th (I think) had some trees. I know I saw more but those are the ones I remember.

Please go to 8th and 8th. Those guys just opened up a pet store/Christmas tree store. They seem so earnest. So please buy your Jesus Christ Tree there.

Oops, just found out that it's not the same people who own the pet supply store. It's their landlord who's selling the trees.

I got my tree from the lady outside Key Foods on 5th Ave. A beautiful Balsam about 7 feet tall for $50. From comparing the quality and prices of other trees in the Slope I'm happy with my decision.

i can't remember if i bought my tree from lowe's or home depot last year, but it was solid. lasted a long time (was very green when i tossed it), lots to choose from in their lots.

The Boy Scouts sell trees at the park on 5th and 3rd. That's where we usually get ours -- can't remember how much it was, but I think it was reasonable, plus they'll carry it home for you.

I don't know if they're there this year because I haven't walked by, but there's a great Xmas tree operation in Windsor Terrace in a vacant lot on 16th Street between PPW and 10th Avenue. Huge selection, fresh trees, really nice folks (they'll let you look at a bunch of trees) and decent prices. We've gotten trees from them the past two years. Also, the small florist on the next block over (Windsor Pl -- just off of PPW) has smaller trees for very good prices.

Jealous of all this tree-buying talk. Our kitten is turning into quite the climber, so we're taking a pass on one this year.

I can tell you where NOT to buy a tree: the CVS on 9th Street between 5th and 6th. I saw some young, drunk guys walk out of Dram Shop and get the idea to take a piss on the christmas trees. They were so amused with themselves.

And I saw some clown let his dog piss on the Boy Scout trees by the Stone House. Fucking idiots all around.
