Large street fight on New Years Eve

Did anyone see the gigantic fight that began somewhere around 11th street and 7th avenue on New Years Eve?

I live on 11th street and shortly after midnight I began hearing screams and generally loud behavior. I chalked it up as some kids enjoying ringing in the new year until I looked out of my window and to my horror, saw 30+ kids beating and punching one another, throwing bottles and trash can tops, this went on, continuously for over half an hour. I repeatedly called the police (who did not seem concerned when I told them I was in no danger) they did not even show up until much much later and once they did they did nothing to stop these children who had spilled out into the middle of 7th avenue and were kicking and punching one another with cop cars in plain sight. (I had left my house at this point to try and flag down a patrol car or something so this would end) Even worse than the children ruthlessly brawling were grown adults standing on their stoops egging these kids on, laughing and joking, is this what we have become?

I was repeatedly harassed and screamed at by children who couldn't have been more than 16 or 17 screaming "F*ck Park Slope" in my face. (To my understanding, after speaking with some of my neighbors who also witnessed this, the fight began because some kids from Harlem and the Upper West Side had problems with Park Slope and its residents, my question is, why come to this neighborhood to start your nonsense? If you don't like Park Slope, fine, stay out, we don't need this harassment and violent behavior on our streets.)

The biggest shock to me is that the police did absolutely nothing to stop this mayhem (that is, when they finally showed up) with the horrific death of Sharif Abdallah just 10 months ago you would think that the local police would be more concerned with street fights in this neighborhood.

Shame on the police, the children who rung in the new year with such disgusting violence and hostility, and the immature and frankly immoral residents of Park Slope who watched this happen and did nothing to stop it.

I drove through them on 11th st at about 1245am. I thought, wow such young kids, they must have been drinking and cannot hold it. They moved away enough to allow me to pass. While there were punches being thrown, I wouldn't say that I saw anybody really being hurt(These were no heavyweights). Regardless, I am surprised that the Police did nothing as it was a big commotion and the Police were coming down the block behind me at the time and I thought to myself, well that will be the end of it.

PennyLane - I live on 11th Street as well, between 6th and 7th. I was inside and didn't hear a thing - which is sort of shocking. New Year's Day, I did notice a house across the street that had been toilet-papered. But again, I heard nothing.

This is really awful - I'm especially surprised at the adults' behavior in all this, and the police's unwillingness to put an end to it.

Avoidance= no conceivable physical harm to cops.

Involvement= likely physical harm to cops.

Cops aren't stupid. They avoid both their responsibility and possible physical harm to themselves.

These were not tough looking kids, my friends in the car remarked that they looked like private school kids. Believe me the cops wouldn't have been intimidated.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about. Without someone willing to press charges what are the cops supposed to do. Do you honestly expect or want the police to arrest people on NYE's for breaking bottles or hurling garbage can lids (or expletives)? It's not the kind of behavior we should tolerate normally but it is NYE and we tend to brace ourselves for certain nonsense.

I am presuming you called the precinct and not 911, you would not be talking to the police if you had called 911. Right away you made a judgment as to the severity of the incident (less than an immediate threat to life or property) I suspect that they would notch it down even further without any corroborating calls of injuries or weapons involvement.

further indicates the level of violence probably didn't reach a threshold for serious police involvement.

Cops are pragmatists. They will always husband their resources for something more important until proven otherwise.

yea good job calling the cops ... better they avoid getting involved than tasing and shooting a bunch of teenagers.

I was there too. The fight later spilled out into the 7th ave F stop and onto the train as the NYPDs solution to this was to herd all of the kids into the train station. 

The train was stopped for over 15 minutes while people continued fighting and screaming "fuck park slope" until the cops finnally came and chased everyone out of the station back onto 7th avenue where it yet again continued.

 

The original poster made far too big a deal of this though. everyone fought with just their fists and no one was seriously injured. 

Why did she get so involved (leaving her house to "flag down a patrol car"? come on) unless it involved her or her children she shouldve let well enough alone.

Overall it was nothing more than ego + intoxication coupled with rich park slope kids feeling as though they have to prove they aren't pussy.

I hope you are proud of yourself and enjoyed your new years as you certainly ruined it for plenty of residents who don't want to deal with this nonsense on our block.

Hopefully the next time you set foot in Park Slope you will be recognized by a cop and arrested and taken to jail where you belong.

A lot of my friends were in this fight its really funny to see it online i have heard so many stories but yeah it was kids from beacon that live in the upper west side that talk shit about kids from brooklyn because a lot of park slope kids go to beacon and there was a party on 11th street. I think your making way too big a deal about this no one even got badly hurt. This shit just kinda happens with kids adults just dont understand it

So this is a known thing? Beacon kids are all "elite", and they're lucky they get into that competitive academic high school! Spoiled Brats. Course they have to come to the slope to fight other smarty pants; they couldn't stand their own ground.

kids behaving like kids, when i was growing up, we had after school fights all the time. nobody call the cops, only thing home owners wanted was for us to take it away from their front doors.
we never fought near the school, cause we would of gotten detention etc.. we always meet near some house some where etc....and enough of us show up to make sure nobody brought weapons etc... just fist and feet.

I got video of the tail end of the fight on the train, it was pretty funny, I've seen worse.

Just looked like a buncha kids fighting and holding up the train.

Who wouldn't stop and stare at that.
