johnny mack's taking over elementi space on 7th avenue

Mack's is the only place in Bklyn where I have seen my favorite beer, Kostritzer Schwarzbier, on tap so I am sure that I will be in there often. Dinner for two last Saturday was $40--two burgers with spicy fries and two pints. I think that is pretty reasonable.

They did seemed a little understaffed for a Saturday night (it was pretty packed at 7 pm), but I am sure they will work that out..,. and I didn't mind the bright interior as I like to see what I am eating. I think they will do quite well--and with all of the empty storefronts and stale restaurants on 7th, it's nice to see a thriving new business open up.

That's funny. That was about the time I walked by. 4 people at the bar and 2 two tops.

And they have that on tap in the new German joint on Fulton Street in Fort Greene.

I just walked by there and the first thing that came to mind seeing the bar area was "hotel bar" in that same sort of terribly decorated, cold, depressing way. Not a fan of the decor.

Carmen.. I understand that reaction to the decor.
I have not seen it yet.. but will get up to the avenue and check it out.
It is so important that the physical stuff of a bar or restaurant be in place so that we feel comfortable in it.

Resolved.. we should all try it once... and be hopeful.

Perhaps they will dim the lights so no one will realize how old I am when I walk in to the spotlights..lol.

It seriously screamed Holiday Inn Express Suites to me (I used to travel a lot for work and spent many a lonely night trying to forget the horrible day with the client drinking at those bars which always smelled like new car...) I really dont think I could enjoy a glass of wine there without feeling like I need my laptop open in front of me

Carmen... I understand what you are saying.. I do remember those business trips and feeling a drink in the hotel bar would relax me. Never worked when the place was just so generic and uninviting.

Old Park Slope bars like Snooky's got some patina over the years from smokers and that unique smell from old beer. Or was it the old guys at the bar watching your New York Yankees? SInce there aren't any smokers in bars anymore, I guess Mack's will have to work harder to gain that old ambience.
And turn down the lights, please. The gripe about Elementi in these pages and others is that it looked too generic. Mack's on 8th Avenue has some character, but it's been around awhile - the bar area is where all the action is.

sounds like it's worth saving, and could be decent with a few minor tweaks.

perhaps they honestly don't even realize what the problem is which is a shame because they seemed to have really tried to make a nice place judging by all the work that seemed to be going on before it opened. none of the complaints sound major though...dim the lights and maybe some small decor changes and perhaps it would be great.

does it have a deck or outdoor area?

I ate there last Saturday too and enjoyed it. Food was good, staff was very nice, lighting was fine for the hour, mixed crowd. I honestly don't understand all the criticism about this place, they've been open a little over a week. Some people in this neighborhood bitch way too much. As many said about Elementi, if you don't like it then don't go there. I'm glad they're open, their shoestring fries are freaking delicious.

It's not called bitching. It's called offering criticism, and letting others know whether it's worth checking out or not. Some people don't like bright, awkwardly layed out restaurants with kids running around. Most seem to agree.

That "review" is totally ridiculous. First of all, she had a great time, loved her drink but writes a negative review because she "heard" people didn't like the food (her defense: "and I hear things" wtf?). That inexcusably sorry excuse for journalism plus "ladie's" for "ladies'" and "skater's" for "skaters'" and how can anyone take her for a legitimate writer? Her sloppy writing makes her sound like a bored housewife who started a blog as a hobby. Good luck getting people to take you seriously.
