If anyone can identify this guy and is willing to cooperate please call the 77th Detective Squad @ 718 735 0661 or email the Commanding Officer @ [email hidden]. What some of you are doing is terrific, we need as many 'witnesses' as possible so this guy goes away for a long time. Thank you.

A few posters stated he was seen diving under parked cars as the police passed by, that sounds like he had outstanding warrants and may have been picked up for something else, rather then the assaults that have been posted on this thread..

^ Hopefully you're right. But I saw a cop walking the beat on Sat. afternoon on Vanderbilt...that's not so common, so I suspect the hunt is still on.

I should have used my Whynot police interrogation skills to determine exactly what he was looking for...but I didn't.

P.S. I wonder if there will ever be an obligation to identify yourself as a journalist when you are a blogger? ...reporters for traditional print and broadcast mediums are supposed to identify themselves.

I'm not sure that one is above or below the other; they're just not the same thing. I've never heard a term for people who post on message boards, other than people who post on a specific message board or comment board from an aggregator site (redditors, diggtards, /b/tards, etc.). Maybe posters? But unlike bloggers, it wouldn't make sense except in context.

I was just walking home from the GAP station and on Plaza Street near Vanderbilt Ave. there were 6 cops surrounding a young black man about 16 years old wearing the jacket described on this blog and they were asking him where his cell phone was. I did not see a bike next to him, maybe he ditched it somewhere else. I hope se is the guy and they nabbed him.

I also saw, just before 5:30pm tonight a man lurking around GAP, on the berm side of Plaza Street who fit the description of our phone guy. He was definitely lurking, scanning the crowd, sauntering up and down Plaza between Flatbush and the subway exit. What caused me to notice him was his jacket--it had those initials on the back. The guy was on foot, though, so I was hesitant to jump to the conclusion that he was the same person who has been behind all these phone robberies, just because he had the same jacket and just because he was standing on the street. I made eye contact with him, and made sure that there was a good distance between him and me. Also took a look and didn't see anyone talking on a phone.

But then, as I was walking from my apartment to the gym, I saw those cops. Combined with seeing someone minutes before who fit the description of the phone nabber, I had to wonder if the cops finally caught him.

ETA: Unless someone else saw the same guy too and called the cops.

I am SOOOOO hopeful

...even if they didn't catch him in the act, they can simply take his picture and get all of his identifying info.

then simply release him.

then simply show his picture to everyone who had their electronics taken.

then simply go to his apartment and arrest his sorry ass.

or simply go to his house whenever in the future someone reports a similar crime.

or simply stand outside his house at 5 pm, then follow him as he walks/rides to the same area he kept going to over and over!

A bored man and his ever willing dog went on a walk just now. They have the following to report:

1. They walked around the area in question with hopes of seeing no police, under the theory that they would not be around if the infamous cell phone thief had been caught.

2. As they approached the 7th Ave station, they were disappointed to see a 77th pct van stopping and about 6 cops getting out.

3. They then realized the cops were headed across the street to Antonios. The human then asked one of them, "Did you guys catch the cell phone thief on the bike?".

4. The cop responded "No, we just got on duty. But the shift before us thinks they may have"

5. The cops proceeded across Flatbush, the man and his dog proceeded up Flatbush to GAP.

6. Both then returned to their natural state (man on computer, dog lying on floor looking at door waiting for female human to come home).

I wonder why...this young man felt the urge to repeatedly come back to the scene of the crime. There must be a criminal profile or syndrome -- anyone into criminal psychology? Like, does he "want" to get caught or is he "addicted" to this type of acting out, etc., etc?

Perhaps the thief (AKA "young man"), was/is just short of common sense (AKA "not really the sharpest knife in the box"). Anyways, I hope they got him and he gets what he deserves.

people are naturally lazy, and he probably lives close by and perception of easy pray and easy money. guys tend not to move far away from home or his familiar surroundings.

My husband saw him last night while being arrested and said he looked like he was about 16.....a kid.....clearly not the sharpest pencil in the drawer to begin with, the idiot was obviously unaware he had a whole neighborhood after him and didn't think through the potential consequences of returning to the same location night after night.

Although I would love input from our readers at the 77th pct regarding what the individual has been charged with, as well as confirmation that the genius in question indeed lived nearby....

I fear such confirmation may not be forthcoming.

yes, we seem to have 3 posters (bricktop, cement top, bkchickie) who all report a person "closely resembling our suspect" -to put it extremely mildly- as being arrested within the six block area that the suspect in these crimes frequently operated.

This, combined with the comment I got from the cop last night, makes me think that the aforementioned genius/suspect is now in desperate need of a good defense attorney.

It is my sincere hope everyone who had electronics stolen recently is able to work closely with the 77th pct, to identify (or rule out) the suspect.

Now would also be a good time to report past events that are similar in nature so that all charges that the suspect may be guilty of can be adjudicated.

Ah,yes, I'm all about "due process under the law". He's "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law".

P.S. There's nothing in the rules that say you can't root for the side the detectives and ADA represent. ...The rules simply say the process simply begins with an arrest, that an arrest itself proves nothing.

I was afraid someone was about to suggest a charitable collection to pay for a few sessions for the genius to sort out his possible "syndrome".

Thanks to this robbing idiot and the cynicism of the 77th Precinct, I received a summons today after pulling my bike up onto the corner at Prospect and Vanderbilt to go to the grocery store.

I stopped to lock my bike bike and was waved over to the police van. I submitted my identification and politely answered questions to the two officers about where I live, what I was doing, and whether I have ever had any other summonses (the answer was no).

After punching me in to the computer they informed me to follow them up the street as they were going to write me a summons. One of the cops helpfully informed me that this was because a bicycle-mounted robber was terrorizing the block.

If it was not extremely evident from having followed me up the bike lane that I was an orderly, very well-lit commuter, their subsequent interaction with me must have shown that I certainly did not fit the MO of the robber, did not have any offenses of record, and posed no harm whatsoever with by behavior to pedestrians of any kind.

Nonetheless they chose to burden me with this frivolous summons for what is ostensibly a criminal offense, which I will now need to take a day off work to fight.

Thanks, 77th! What decent, reasonable guys you are. As a new resident and homeowner in the neighborhood I certainly feel welcome.

What does the summons say? Did they make up something to charge you with?

Although discretion could've been exercised, you did in fact break the Law. I'm not saying that I agree with the Officers, but it does sound like they were doing their job. Either way, welcome to the nabe!
