    Good!

In general, I think PS residents did a good job shoveling this week. The one MAJOR exception is the group that is responsible for the Community Garden at the corner of 5th Avenue and President. That corner was like an iceskating rink this morning.

It was pretty hairy yesterday morning but pretty good this morning. Still the odd place is un-shoveled, including the place next door to me.

This must be why the people on my corner finally shoveled - they never do. But the sidewalk around the old Cocotte/Primo Atto have not been touched.

    Businesses who NEVER shovel:

    Jennifer Convertibles on 5th Ave
    Subway on 5th Ave

C'mon everyone, let's start outing the culprits!

The brownstone on the SW corner of 6th and 6th never shovels...it was like an ice rink this morning.

I also enjoy the people who own brownstones (as evidenced by their stoops never being cleared because they enter through the ground level) who don't bother to shovel their walks. I hope someone falls outside and sues that home right out from under you.

I live on this block and have a target for the laziness. The building's (317 4th Street) super is a middle aged african american man who drives a huge red Dodge pickup. Dude is so lazy he only shovels a small area around the door on the side for the residents to exit. I called him out on it and he didn't say a word and got in his truck and drove off. Anyone know this guy? It looked like he had several shovels and salt in the back of his truck...maybe he is a super at other buildings in the area.

I think you're talking about the building on 6th Ave - the building I'm talking about is a small brownstone off of 5th Avenue - I doubt they have a super.

And I did call 311 about the old Cocotte site.

Nope. I'm talking about the same spot and I called 311 as well.

Bank of America ATM on 7th between 9th and 10th.

Just a massive sheet of ice, except for two feet in front of the door. A lawsuit waiting to happen.

I know what building you mean now - but I think the part covered in ice is owned by whoever owns the building where Cocotte used to be - but no matter - we know now that at least 2 people have called 311.

There's also a brownstone there - there's a driveway next to it (not sure if they own it or not) - and they are the laziest people ever - everyone around them will be clean and they still have snow. They did finally shovel but I can only hope they got a fine (I think that's the only thing that would make them shovel)

Former Miracle Grill site on 7th Avenue and 3rd Street. Can't the landlord get someone over to shovel? Because it's the corner building, it means there is a massive build-up of ice and snow on two stretches of sidewalk, not just one.

Bank of America's ATM sidewalk on 7th and 9th is atrocious, like an ice rink.

They are pretty damn lazy. I would have more sympathy for them if they were elderly or homebound but they come and go pretty frequently and were at least a day later than everyone else in terms of clearing their sidewalk. Kids were all over the neighborhood and willing to shovel snow for $20...pay them or get out and shovel yourself.

My landlord who lives in is so lazy. He shovels a narrow walking path only when it stops snowing. He also never puts the trash or recycling out so our front looks like a dump. Can I call in an anonymous citation?

Our building would gladly pay some kids to shovel instead of us doing it but we never see or hear of any around our center slope spot : / If anyone knows numbers of kids looking for some $$ pass it on!

I prefer non-shovelers to the salt, personally. The salt and de-icers cause a host of troubles for dogs that I will save for another time.

Around the park they totally skip clearing large areas of sidewalk then just dump about an 1/2 inch layer of rock salt on a block of the sidewalk.

I just can't confer here, how much I hate the salt. It's not much work to shovel, just do it instead of dumping chemicals out. Until I had a dog with, among other damage, bloodied pads, I was only mildly irritated at the laziness of using chemicals, but not I really detest it. That's why you see dogs wearing shoes around here, not to keep their feet warm or dry.

I hate the whole "lawsuit waiting to happen" thing. Plenty of people wipe out on the ice, get bruised bums, and have a lousy time 'cause of rotten neighbors. Although this time around, some places that were good about shoveling ended up with a slick of ice anyway, often from their uphill neighbor's runoff.
  • opossumqueen
    opossumqueen
Thanks for that info Mrs. H!

And I think I'm with pitu. We live somewhere that it snows and is cold. There is a good chance of slipping on some ice during the winter, but that shouldn't mean instant lawsuit. Just don't go out in your nice, no tread shoes when it's like this. I'm shocked when I see woman in high heels out trying to navigate this stuff while I just have on my giant waterproof boots :)

The day after the snow I was really happy to see a few small business owners on 5th Ave not only breaking up all the ice near their corner but unclogging the street drain near them. That helped a lot with the slick curb-cuts and ankle-deep puddles of slush.

Right? I saw two people trudging to work Thursday morning wipe out (in their sensible shoes) on the Union St downhill to the subway...and then Friday night, the teetering boots were out on Fifth Ave. Ladies please - only Prince should work that after a snowstorm.

Don't want to shovel? $100-$350 fine.

I totally disagree with pitu and opossum queen about this issue. Part of owning a building in a residential area is the upkeep of the sidewalk outside your building. There is no excuse for not having a reliable full-time super that will tend to your buildings. This is laziness and nothing more.

Seriously. The point of shoveling is not "only" thinking about everyone else as able bodied. There are plenty of non able bodied individuals, elderly, those who have had serious injuries, with serious arthritis etc etc. They live in a city hence don't typically have cars/trucks etc. Those laws are there for a reason, and I, for one, am quite glad that people have the option to pressurize those who would like to own property in the city and yet fail to maintain it. I understand this isn't the case for most, but its not very 'enlightened' to only think of most, now is it?

Dave, I don't know what we disagree on. I'm saying landlords have a responsibility, and it's not *just* 'cause they might get sued.

I JUST walked by there. They shoveled exactly 1 foot wide path. Enough to get one foot in front of the other provided you do not try anything fancy.

I called 311 on Saturday, was on hold for less than 5 minutes and the sanitation department issued the ticket on Sunday afternoon.

They most definitely didn't shovel. It was one of the neighbors who was finally fed up with the ice rink. That building owner deserves whatever lawsuit comes his way from someone falling. Utter neglect. If they had shoveled, then I'm pretty sure that they'd take the ticket off of the front door.
