With a wrecking ball staring him in the face, Daniel Goldstein is taking $3 million from Forest City Ratner to leave his condo.

Well that's up from the 1.2 million that everyone else in the building took after owning their condos for what...... a year and a half mebbe?
Yes I'm bitter, if I had only known I would've eaten Ramen noodles and doubled my money!

It shows that Goldstein was in it for the money all along. So much for standing up for the good of the community. He held out and got a a $3 million pay day. Will probably use it to buy a brownstone in a gentrified part of Brooklyn and perhaps a second home somewhere upstate. Go Nets!!!

And the moral of the story is: anyone's principles can be compromised for a price.

Nice going, Dan. All those years of hard work and in the end you'll be remember simply as a sell-out!

I am sure there was a negotiation. I would love to know Daniel's initial offer to Ratner to sell out. I am guessing around $10 million.

Weren't a bunch of you all saying just a few short days ago that Daniel was an idiot for not taking the money years ago? And that it served him right to get a low-ball offer? That he should know when to quit?

But, now that all of his options have pretty much been exhausted, after years of organizing and fighting, after years of putting up with construction, threats, insults, slurs and worse, and he'd be forced to take whatever the state offers in a month or two (which would probably not been what his place was worth), he does what any one of you would do and makes the best possible deal he could for himself and his family, he's a sellout?

a little hostility here? if i'm not mistaken, he never asked to move out. it's easy to criticize the last man standing for not taking a bullet for the cause but i don't know what that would have accomplished. seems like a case of knowing when to fold 'em, and then taking what he could for it. i don't think it diminishes his years of hard work trying to derail the project, which i've seen no evidence to suggest would not have been his preferred result.

I retract any statements that he was an idiot for not taking a payout years ago, as I now see that holding out for a larger amount of money has been a very intelligent and calculating plan. The fact that he's yakked so much over the years about principles, ethics, fighting to save his home, etc. only makes him a hypocrite. It's like a certain right wing politician who preached abstinence, yet had a daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock.

Gee, I wonder how much of that money he will donate to DDDB. Or now that Ratner has purchased control over Goldstein's right to speak freely against AY, maybe such a donation would be prohibited. Either way, their web site has no mention whatsoever of his bowdown.

Not to worry, I'm sure that DDDB's alleged 5000 "volunteers" will chip in to continue this very, very important fight.

this presumes that his battle for years against ay was merely a cynical ploy for a better payout. i've seen zero evidence to suggest that he would not have been happier shutting the project down, or that he wasn't sincere in that quest. taking compensation when the battle's over hardly changes that.

or is it that you just don't like him? or you really wanted AY built at all costs, whatever the giveaways and tax breaks and shady dealings?

as for continuing the fight, i, for one, will continue.

This is by far the most I've seen an apartment go for in a blighted area.

how about -- he fought valiantly for 6-7 years but eventually the big bad Goliath forced the meek little David to flee -- with his wife and young child.

Let's not forget who the bad guy is, here, people.

Good for Goldstein. What he should he have done? He lost all of his appeals, he was going to be evicted...even Freddie's Bar took compensation instead of chaining themselves to the gates. Goldstien should put some change in his pocket.

Quitting your job and dedicating six years of your life to fight for a long shot, all the while being subjected to incredible pressure and public scrutiny, hardly seems like a calculated plan for getting wealthy.

His eviction was inevitable. He could hold out for another month until he was forcibly removed or he could leave a month sooner and receive a larger payout. What would you do?

It's so strange that everyone is talking about Daniel's motivation without considering what it's like to live on a private street owned by Ratner. Has anyone here been on his block recently? Answer: No. You can only get there with the permission of Forest City Ratner. Now that he has a toddler, he's got to consider his family a little bit.

And another thing: The ESDC technically owns his home already.

A grand gesture of getting thrown in jail would be a lovely image... if you're a college student with nothing to lose. It's not something I would ever want my daughter to see.

against state agencies and a greedy billionaire

with a blind eye

If he offered me double what I paid for my apartment 3 1/2 years ago I would sell to Osama Bin Laden!
$3,000,000 is exorbitant, Goldstein could have taken fair market price and a little something for his trouble, call it $750,000 and kept the moral high ground.

A simple question.

If offered the $3,000,000.00 , would you have accepted it and if not, why not?

The apartment was not his to sell. It was confiscated by the state on March 1, 2010

property value, legal fees, harassment... etc al.

I've seen harassment suits that settled for more than that



but apparently this price tag is what ratner and esdc

was willing to pay to compensate

a man and his family for 7 years of abuse and torture

in my opinion it's even not enough
