Also, wait staff hate credit cards because it requires their bosses to tip them out at the end of the day or week vs. them taking their tips and walking. If a business does 100% credit (no cash comes in on a particular day) its possible that they don't get tipped out at the end of their shift, and instead get tips in their check at the end of the week. For folks who want cash in their pocket, its a pain. I've seen employees tell customers "Our machine is down" just to make sure they get some cash for themselves.

I've seen a major resurgence of this recently, within the last 6 months or so. Hadn't seen it in years but all of the sudden it seems like lots of stations now charge more for credit, although it is usually the smaller guys. I know there are a few on Atlantic that advertise a cash price and then when you get to the pump there are two prices with a higher one for credit.

I believe that if you like a place you go back to it and support it if you don't like it move on its really that easy.

Every place I waitressed or bartended at had credit cards machines. I never ONCE had to wait for money in my check or wait to get paid the tips at the end of the night. No restaurant owner/manager I worked for had time to sit there and hash out CC tips- I was always allowed to take it out of the register myself and pocket right away.

Not saying you're wrong- I just never experienced that nor have I ever heard of that.

My workplace has a big poster in the kitchen outlining laws relating to employment. One of those states that employers may not retain any part of the tips of employees (except for the coat check employees). It is illegal in NY state to make employees wait for their tips. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it's illegal. We're an office, so we don't get tips, but it is there all the same.

as for the CC minimum thing, apparently that's now allowed / again -- or at least consumerist thinks so. am happy to have a minimum but resent having to go to the ATM machine for $50 plus meals. that's just me. maybe i should eat home more often, or be more organized about getting cash ahead of time.

I avoid credit cards in general, so maybe I'm the strange one. If I can't afford it I don't buy it.

The primary appeal of credit cards to me is they are a convenient way of paying for things; you needn't carry debt, and in fact with the annual fee American Express you can't under most circumstances. AmEx also has a lot of good benefits and in my experience they tend to be very helpful in any dispute you may find yourself in (where they are a third party).

No, I don't work for AmEx.

I have an AmEx (for work). I don't understand why my office pays the annual fee to keep that card. It seems to me that my fee-free MasterCard works just as well, and MasterCard has been helpful in the one case of fraud I've experienced. Someone once told me that AmEx carries more prestige than other credit cards, and maybe that was true 30 years ago, but who cares today?

Yes, the CC companies charge a fee reducing profits for stores, and the CC companies probably have unfair leverage. However, I don't like to carry cash because of my personal spending habits, thus I need to use my debit card often. If a store takes credit cards, they are automatically on my go to list, and places that don't take them aren't even considered. Good business sense tells me that a percentage of a sale is better than no sale at all.
