Unmanned drone hovering over the neighborhood this morning?

My husband and daughter say they saw what they think was an unmanned drone or a flying sky spy thing hovering above apartment buildings at Underhill and St. John's this morning....some metallic round object about 3 or 4 feet in diameter with blinking lights....if only one of them reported seeing it I'd say they were having delusions, but they both swear they saw it, so.....what could it have been? Could the police have sent something up as part of their surveillance efforts?

I was at the north end of Prospect Park yesterday afternoon near Grand Army Plaza and there were two silver things hovering high above. They looked too high to be kites and were too still to be planes. I didn't see any blinking lights, but I thought it was very odd to see these things floating way up there. I don't know what they were, but maybe the same thing your family saw?

Wasn't there another posting about a similar sighting within the past year?

reminds me of the reports of insect-sized drones at the RNC convention.

maybe what you saw was a toy?

Could it be one of these? Ar drone. Cost about 300 USD. Avail. on Amazon. Controlled by iPhone. Dimensions = 2 feet diameter, stock size.

best thing to do is to take a shot at it and see if a cruise missile comes through your door a few minutes later.

I recall seeing what you described back in May. Never got confirmation on what it was.

So do the unmanned drones replace the black helicopters we used to see all the time?

    Update Jan 2013:

There have already been drones in use over NYC, but it sounds as if the NYPD is looking into expanding their use!

So far, only surveillance drones seem to be in use over US cities.

Armed drones are likely reserved for high profile events: The Super Bowl. Olympics. Presidential parades. UN mtgs.

    I hope so.

Can I say I don't believe the FAA without being given a tinfoil hat?

    Above Wash Times Article:

“The FAA has no authority to make rules or enforce any rules relative to privacy,” he said. “We can ask [the industry] to take into consideration the privacy issue. … There aren’t any rules to date on that.”

I can see the advantages of having a watchful eye in the sky at all times.

....I would like one over high profile events.
