It wouldn't shock me if it was an intentional slowdown...The target of the message would be management, not the general public...The message being "Give us a better deal, or else we will make you look like idiots again." If this was the cause, it will never be revealed, since its in the interest of all parties to keep it quiet.

More likely is that all the senior people who usually authorize overtime, declare emergencies, sign proclamations, etc. were on vacation, and a skeleton crew of junior officials were left in charge...My guess is that someone called their boss, who was on vacation, and the boss didn't return the call until it was too late...

"It's like a massive art installation that blanketed everything in sight in white. It makes the neighborhood look different, sound different, feel different. Sidewalks are flanked by walls of snow. Kids are building snow forts in the middle of the street.

    Christo eat your heart out."

    Wonderful ... thanks, piano!

agreed. i absolutely loved it. we went sledding (just adults). we climbed into abandoned igloos (2 on my block alone). we went snowpile diving. we warmed up in a diner with some brunch and hot chocolate. it was one of my favorite days ever in the city.

I don't think that most people were prepared because of the holiday (not a lot of folks watching the news on Christmas Day) and because the city did a pretty bad job of letting folks know what to expect.

Really, the mayor should have said "If you are a healthy adult please go outside and shovel walkways and paths immediately. For those of you in the outer boroughs we may not get to you for a couple of days so consider getting together and digging out your own streets."

    Thank you Krowonhill.

Just saw this below. Now I'm fully convinced it was an intentional slowdown. I usually side with labor on these issues, but this wasn't a protest. It's one thing to protest impending cuts, but the cuts already happened. This was nothing more than spiteful revenge.

All I'm sayin'... back in Vermont where the snow is as deep as my mom, I would have been easily able to get pizza delivered. In Brooklyn, I had to wait till Thursday. That is Hippy degeneration, right there. Freakin' quote me on that.

I had a friend tell me on Wed night that the failure to plow was the result of a union slow down. This occurred before any news reports and the comment from the republican councilman. A union slow down is a very plausible explanation for the slow snow removal.
