NoBar's classy new awning is up next to Sakura Tokyo. Anyone know when they're opening?

Oh my! 2 pretty awnings up in a row, what is the neighborhood coming to? The very handsome proprietor said open by the end of the month (Thursday), And the official grand opening early April.

I'd posted a pic in another forum, but it's worth posting here too:

You can also see prelim shots of the inside at:

The bar looks lovely though I am not really diggin the wall art that remind me of velvet paintings. For decor he should take a card from the back room at Gureje- that does a good job with afrocentric art. But the wood that I can see of the bar is lovely and it generally looks swanky based on the pics. According to interviews Mackie actually built the bar ( if so he's fine and has mad skilz yo!!!)

Anyway I will be excited to grab a few drinks when it opens.

    From the NoBar facebook page:

"Opening spring 2011 rooftop Biergarten located above NoBar."

    Sweet.

Just saw that the space where NoBar was originally going to open (corner of Nostrand and Halsey) is looking like it is about to open as a bar as well. Anyone know any details?

@Ben - It is going to be a bar/lounge called "Voodoo" by one of the owners of Ms. Dahlia's Cafe. Given how nice Ms. Dahlia's is, I wouldn't expect anything but another quality establishment. Word is they will be opening very soon as well.

Just like on this end of Nostrand, there is a lot of stuff going on on that end of Nostrand. In addition to the new addition of Voodoo, the Golden Krust and the Trinidadian restaurant, Melanies, recently got really nice makeovers. There is now a Checker's. An Indian restaurant. A new wine bar. A nice spa.

Thanks for the info, just saw this article about it, I guess they had a soft opening last night:

Voodou was listed as an exiting new bar/restaurant on Gothomist.

Hey Nostrand Park I think you misread the page though I am not positive (without having a screen shot from previous readings). I think it has said opening winter 2011 for a long time meaning that they originally thought they could open in Feb 2011- (I dont think this implies opening in Nov/Dec 2011 as you suggest). Then fb page said they were opening "soon" in April and now we dont know when it will open.

I suspect they are waiting for their liquor license. Maybe someone could post to their fb page and ask.

The papermag article linked to above says they will open this month. Even more interesting is this quote:

"He's already planning further neighborhood investments across the street; he's opening a speak-easy-style wine bar and performance space called InTheNO"

So it looks like even more is coming to this area in the near future.

Happy to hear. Thanks for the correction!

Good to hear. He'd mentioned about doing something when we ran into him a few months ago, but didn't say what it would be. Looks like there is a lot of stuff going on on the southside of Nostrand.

I went last Thursday. Nice little spot. They're still working some things out -- no credit card machine yet, so cash only, and when I got there at 7pm they didn't have any food yet, but eventually they got some chips and salsa and bbq meatballs. There were two flatscreens, people playing on the one pool table, and drink specials ($4 margaritas and 2-for-1 Coronas). It's a nice chill vibe, and Anthony Mackie was actually behind the bar serving drinks.

Sounds like it has potential for a future Brooklynian happy hour.

That seems odd. Anthony Mackie has been in a bunch of papers talking about the opening of the second NoBar in Williamsburg. Nothing about him getting out of the first one.

Press about the changes they've made recently, especially their expanded menu. And Anthony Mackie's still an owner: http://www.homereporternews.com/food_drink/dining-out-no-holds-barred-new-orleans-at-nobar/article_55d2dbb0-28a6-11e4-b680-0019bb2963f4.html

They seem to have recently had a setback. They were closed by the health department on 4/2/2015:

Anyone know if they have been able to reopen yet?

I used to love going to NoBar for drinks and I've enjoyed several delicious meals there.  However, the last time that I went (and I stress last time), the bartender was reusing people's old drink glasses, picking out the straw with his fingers, scooping the dirty glass directly into the ice, and then plopping the straw back into the drink.  I've spent a lot of time in dives, but that was a new one for me to see.  They really need to step up their cleanliness game!

I've heard offline that this place is still closed due to the DOH. We are now talking about 4 weeks!

...hope they are able to reopen.

    Still closed. https://www.facebook.com/NoBarBKNY

It has now been closed over a month.

If they don't reopen by June 1, we should keep our eyes out for a For Lease sign.

    Still closed.

I have yet to see the address listed as being for lease, but this location is attractive as a result of being large and having a kitchen.

It would not surprise me if an off market deal happens, and we get a diner or something in this space.

Lots of ped traffic. Several market rate developments coming to Fulton.
