    See also: "teh".

I know I'm an old lady and all, but am I the only one disturbed by the animal pictures in this thread? I don't want to see that. So not amusing.

I'm pretty sure that Pooh wasn't really harmed...

FWIW, only the cat pic looks like it could be a case of abuse, and even that may be out of context.

Oh, and the snail... and no, that one's definitely not out of context.

I wasn't a big fan of that one either. But I could probably use a kick in the head myself from time to time.

I have to admit that when I had a shady garden I developed a maniacal, murderous hatred for slugs and snails. [Wicked Witch of the West voice] "How about a little BEER, buddyboys? Maybe some SALT? Ah-hahahaha!"

Oh, I understand the origins of leet with the adjacent keys and the numbers that look like letters and all that jazz.

I'm just interested, linguistically, in whether these forms have reached a stage where they're not meant to be spoken aloud. In many cases, internet slang seems to carry meaning that is unpronouncable (e.g. the numeral one in "OMG!!!!1!", which to me conveys sarcastic faux-glee).

But every time I ask questions like that, people insist that they can pronounce those words--so maybe I'm wrong.

From Overheard in New York today:

She Was Quite Modest about It, Too

Teenybopper #1: Ugh... I hate those overly-proud Hispanics!
Teenybopper #2: They drive me insane! They're like, 'Oh my god, Papi, 100 percent Boricua! Holla at me!'
Teenybopper #1: Why can't they speak good English?
Hispanic woman: I believe you mean to say, 'Why can't they speak English well?'
    Teen boy: Owned!
