Isnt ther a grand canyon in Brooklyn Heights? After eating a fatty you can take a stroll to the promenade to walk it off.

My wife and I tried the Grand Canyon burgers last night and were kind of disappointed. She got a burger deluxe (medium), and I got a "Soul Burger" (also medium). The soul burger is like the one at Jackson Hole, with ham, bacon, cheese and fried onions (I think it was featured in a Simpsons episode with the addition of a fried egg). Anyway, both burgers were way overcooked, not medium, and beyond well-done in fact. Even with all the greasy toppings, mine was kind of dry. The regular burger just wasn't very beefy- it sort of tasted more like some institutional "ground meat product". The fries weren't bad (actually, my wife thought they were bad, but I thought they were ok).
The burgers at Tavern on Dean are definitely better. I plan to try all of the ones recommended in this thread and I will report back!

Don't forget about Juniors, their Bacon Cheeseburger has the power to take away my overpowering Jewish guilt. The meat is always perfectly cooked, and the bacon is outrageous. It's a big sandwich and well worth the money. I just wish they'd switch to shoe-strings, the steak fries are too starchy.

Oh that juniors! Yeah my wife won't let me in there just based on the decor. I'm gonna have to work on that. I'm a beaten beaten man. But at least i have Bialys. Enough to last the winter.

Do you mean the one on Flatbush? Or is there another one on Fulton? I know there's a bunch of them (like Caridad in Manhattan and the Bronx).

I think the reason I frequent dive bars (like freddie's which I love) is a kneejerk reaction to the "it has to look beautiful to have good food/beer/whatever" syndrome. I'll drag the wife into Juniors and slather her with cheesecake.

Here's a tip. Take the cheesecake home, win her over in a safe decor and the suggest that next time you go to eat there. The decorations on the box look fine. Introduce it as Brooklyn's Famous Cheesecake.

Junior's also has an outpost at the food court at Grand Central Terminal and it's not quite as kitschy. That might be an option as well.

    Subject: Grand Canyon

I haven't been to Grand Canyon for about four years, but the few times I went there it was scary. Poorly prepared food served by people with questionable hygiene. Then I graduated to the Greek Diner on 7th, which wasn't much better. Finally, that diner by the hospital on 7th filled the bill.

This was all while I was still in PS. Now I like The Usual, although I will admit that Soda's burgers are great. Must try Tavern on Dean...

Is The Usual still with us? I passed by it at brunch time a two Sundays ago and it was shuttered. Heartbreaking.

The Usual is still alive and kicking. I ate a pastrami, egg and cheese there on Saturday and Sunday. Yikes, that's unhealthy.

    Subject: great burger

I have to go along with Tavern on Dean- the burgers are great every time, and the beer selection, on tap, is excellent.
