Questionable construction materials, lies (he calls them promises), noise, rats, traffic clogging construction practices... yup, sounds like another "Quality is A-1" Ratner production

Screw everybody involved in this debacle.

What gets me the most is that scams like this will be perpetrated on the city over and over and over again.

Construction jobs and contracts are all about bidding, political favors, personal relationships and of course unions. I'm not taking a stance on unions here but the fact that local workers aren't working on that site has nothig to do with them getting into the union.

Out of state contractors regularly underbid local companies all over the US. That being said no one should make claims about how many local jobs will be created from a contract. Of course "they" all do. We the public should be aware of this and simply discount such estimates.

This is unfortunately business as usual. Fortunately, no matter what your opinion when complete the arena will provide hundreds of jobs for locals that span a wide spectrum of skill level, educational level, skill level, and pay grade.

One is a sucker if one believes that the above suddenly does not apply due to a CBA.

One can have a community benefits agreement, and have it mean different things to different people.

    Profit still rules

Whether we like it or not, this project is at least four years late due to community opposition, lawsuits, pickets, protests, etc. etc.

Now you want to know where the jobs are?

If you want someone to blame, try looking in the mirror!

  • karl the druid
    karl the druid

    the mirror is quite clear

    some call us the opposition

but no one wants to call us who we are

    the residents

as predicted years and years ago

fcr's would never keep their promise

    to create of local jobs

because they simply never had the intention

that is where the jobs have always been

  • whynot_31

    Had they simply said:

We are going to build an arena with public money, and it will generate huge profits for the developer

I would have respected and believed them.

    .

    .

    .

    However, they said:

We are going to build an arena with public money, and it will give your community jobs, affordable housing and ponies that lay golden eggs.

and because of that I did not believe them, and I questioned the intelligence of those who did believe them.

  • booklaw

I remember reading lots of improbable promises made by the developer... but "ponies who lay golden eggs"? That one I do not remember reading. Do ponies generally lay eggs?

Then again, perhaps I'm reading WN's comment a bit too literally?

If it makes you feel any better, Ratner (who expertly and consistently plays the part of "the jackass" in this story) was forced produce

a golden egg for Daniel Goldstein.

Making it among the few promises kept.

Mr. Druid- Can we get some artwork?

That ringing in my ears - this an echo chamber? Or a hall of mirrors? Some fun house!!

If Jesus Christ himself had come down and miraculously built this arena overnight, employing only local labor creating tons of high-paying jobs, all without a dime of public money and without raising a single particle of dust, 99% of the posters on this bulletin board would still oppose it.

It'll be interesting to see how this all turns out. If this arena and its environs become the social hub of Brooklyn in era of rising gas prices because somebody had the foresight to build on top of the boro's biggest mass transit hub, who will take the credit? As they say, success has a thousand fathers. I'm sure many on this blog will be telling their grandchildren how hard they fought for this project against the crowd of short-sighted locals.

    Or not..... Time will tell.

    i don't think jesus

evoked emminent domain to rid the residents

while playing three card monte with public funds

    Capt-

You seem to confuse " being against an arena", with "being against an arena built with public funds, for a private entity".

    I have no such confusion.

...but I will resent paying high prices to see shows in an arena I have already paid for.

Rarely am I jealous of Nassau County, but I envy how the citizens got to vote on whether they wished to use public money for a new sports arena.

    They voted "no".

The people who will run Barclays Arena were likely happiest of all those in Nassau voted the referendum down.

On this aspect the Capt and I agree:

The Arena will be booked every night, and tremendously succe$$ful.

If I were the developers, I would think that I got a steal on an awesome location.

What's missing from the controversial development site? Not just the jobs and housing, says this writer, but the independent monitor required by the community benefits agreement.

    lots more here

jobs are here, you just had to be part of the unionized labor pool years in advance of the dig. A couple of flag waivers. The guy in a wheelchair selling bottled water is one I have never seen in NYC construction history. Guys on Atlantic are effective in securing the sandwiches and coffee from across the street. As the iron workers get a little further concrete and Qdeck will follow. Deck electricians will again point to the correct locations for boxes that devices can be mounted on. This is skill void design.

The jobs are coming but it's all hot dogs and beer.
