the japanese place on vanderbilt and bergen looks pretty near done. they were working on the facade tonite i went up and introduced myself to them (i know, that's not what new yorkers do. newish transplant from california here). nice couple running the restaurant. they'll have a sushi bar, beer and wine, and cooked japanese food and maybe different asian-y specials each month (thai, chinese, etc).

the interior looks much better than the super generic sign they had up a few months ago would have indicated (saying 'JAPANESE RESTAURANT COMING SOON' in red block letters)

    Now open!

As expected by many, the Mayo store quickly went out of business.

Many deemed it as "stupid" from the day it opened.

Other's walked by, and never saw it open.

A Sandwich shop is coming. http://www.brownstoner.com/blog/2013/03/mayo-store-will-become-a-sandwich-shop/#disqus_thread

I know it's far snarkier to post that the mayo store was "stupid" and therefore going out of business, but if you read the article you posted, it pointed out that they are moving to a larger space where they hope to "double their output" and go national. It doesn't sound like this "stupid" company is going out of business at all.

I actually thought it was an ok concept.

It just amazed me that they chose to do it in an area with high rent. I think it would have made more sense if it was produced in some low price building in Bushwick, and then sold on line, or in novelty/gift shops.

...but, yes, many thought it was stupid.

    I wish them the best.

I look forward to sandwiches. I'll have mine with mustard.

I think mayo is gross, personally, but high-end food is plenty big these days. If they make it somewhere that makes sense, like an industrial zone, then their business stands a perfectly good chance. Maybe they just decided a year's rent on a tiny store was a low price for huge publicity.

2200sqft on Washington apparently costs $54 a year per sqft, so even paying twice that rate on 300sqft costs $32,000 a year. $32,000 isn't a very high price for infamy.

This was the most written about store on Vanderbilt.

...it was mocked by lots of media.

Has anyone heard anything about what might go in the old Pena's spot? It amazes me that such a prime piece of real estate sits empty.

    Jack-

When Pena's gets a tenant, Ellen Fishman and I will try to get the word out as quickly as possible.

    Heads up!

rumor in PH is that a Dumont Burger-style restauarant will be opening on Vanderbilt and St Marks Ave (in the old bodega space) though there is no sign of work there yet.

Man, that would be wonderful. I've been wondering how such a prime space has sat empty for so long. Thanks!

Your wish has been granted! Mark and Bianca at Mermaid's Garden, a CSF around Brooklyn, are planning to open a brick and mortar on Vanderbilt. They're building out this summer so hopefully we'll have fresh, amazing fish in the fall.

This is Fanfreakintastic! Cannot wait!!! Please make sure to keep us posted on this.

ETA - I just realized this is a CSF - will the brick and mortar be a retail store?

    Stacey-

I assume they are using brick and motar and retail store interchangably. So, we can conclude that ovalmama is stating one of the vacant storefronts on Vanderbilt will soon sell fish.

I believe it's the space next to Joyce which was the Chinese takeout place. Joyce's space used to be a fish place, so it's exciting to get a new one back on that block.

Just received an email from the Mermaid's Garden people. They have a Kickstarter Campaign going to help raise funds for the last few bits that need to be taken care of before opening. I've already donated. Here's the link in case anyone is interested:
