Technically, I think that if the trash can/bag is inside a gate it is still private property and therefore you can't leave your trash in it. If it is curbside it is considered refuse and the homeowner can't complain.

Personally, if its bagged and is going into a plastic bag in my can I'm okay with it. If it simply gets dropped into my can with no bag, and then I need to transfer of dispose of it, I'd probably not be happy.

But then again its better than you not picking it up at all!

Incidentally, it's probably unlawful to leave your garbage uncovered outside your building.

To reiterate, I only do it if there is no cover and if there is a bag in the can.

Walked by the same woman's house just now. She came out and started yelling at me (before 8 am) about throwing things in her garbage can. I hadn't thrown a single thing in her (or anyone's) garbage can as my dogs hadn't done their business yet. Getting screamed at by some strange (crazy) woman is a great way to start the day.
